To let 13 year old DC bath 18 month old DC?

Is this really seen as unreasonable? A friend pointed out that it was a massive safety risk!? My eldest is THIRTEEN.

Is this unreasonable to allow it?

It’s fine.

Sandstormbrewing · 17/09/2018 20:59

depends on the 13 yo. Would she watch the 18mo or sit on her phone? ho would she cope if she slipped in the bath, went under or hit her head? Would an adult be in the house?

If a 13 year old can’t bath a 18 month old I’d be worried tbh

Anourish · 17/09/2018 21:00

They're both boys? Grin not sure why you guessed girls!

No, he enjoys helping younger brother in bath, definitely wouldn't be sitting on his phone. He asks to do it, I don't ask him.

It only takes 20 seconds for a child to drown. I wouldn't take that risk.

OrangeMini100Points · 17/09/2018 21:02

And the little one is 18 months, quite steady at that age. I think as long as you're not too far away it's ok. I suppose it depends partly on the different weight/ height ratio.

My 18 month old is a heavy chunk. If she slipped my elder DC would struggle.

Rebecca36 · 17/09/2018 21:04

Perfectly alright.

Oblomov18 · 17/09/2018 21:09

If the 13 year old is mature and trustworthy, then why not.

I don't get the scaremongering post of 'it only takes 20 seconds to drown'. Yes indeed it could. But lower risk if you are paying attention. At aged 30, 40 or 13.

Moody123 · 17/09/2018 21:11

I personally wouldn't, but I still get in the bath with my DS (18 months)
He tried to climb out and slips down the side 🙈

Autumnfairy82 · 17/09/2018 21:49

Depends on the 13 y/o I guess. My two stepdaughters are 13 and 15 and are amazing with DD, aged 16 months. They love doing bathtime and the bottle of milk afterwards. I’m always nearby just incase they need a hand.

LusaCole · 17/09/2018 21:51

I’d be fine with this personally.

Leobynature · 17/09/2018 21:52

A sensible 13 year old would be fine.

agnurse · 17/09/2018 22:09

I think it depends on the children.

In my area, we train baby-sitters as young as 12. One of the skills included in a baby-sitting course is how to properly bathe a young child.

Beautifulblue · 17/09/2018 22:26

My 12 year old sister (big age gap) baths my 14 month old, they do fine. Definitely depends on the maturity of the elder child though!
