To not pay for friend to get her phone fixed after I smashed it?

Friday night me and my friend went out for drinks.
We were stood at the bar and I turned around quick and knocked my friends phone out of her hand,it hit the floor and smashed the screen.
It's still working but the screen is totally cracked.

She was a bit upset saying she didn't have insurance and couldn't afford to get it fixed.
I can't afford it either and shouldn't she have had insurance on such a expensive phone?
Anyway I haven't mentioned it since ..aibu to just not mention it again?
I know she probably expected me to pay to get it fixed but it was a accident and she was the one who let go once I hit her arm.

You could afford to go out for drinks, but you can't afford to offer anything to your friend? perhaps what you may spend on a night out could be offered to your friend to fix the phone? Yes it was an accident, if it was me I'd at least offer something towards the cost

If you hit someone else's car with your car (by accident), you are responsible for the damage. Yes they have insurance but it's your responsibility and actually comes out of your insurance and not theirs, if that makes sense.

If a friend broke my phone by accident I would expect them to at least offer to pay for the repair. You could leave it and not say anything. She may not mention it again, but trust me, she'll be quietly fuming, and it may end up affecting your friendship.

If you value her as a friend, offer the £80 and forgo a night out.

It’s her responsibility to have insurance. It was a total accident - you weren’t being reckless or stupid. You shouldn’t have to pay to subsidise her bad decision not to insure her phone.

I'd offer to pay something at least. Even if she had insurance it would be a £50/£75 excess charge.

Of course you should pay! It was an accident - but you turned round quickly without looking behind / to the side of you. It was an accident caused by you.

I’d offer to pay half. I don’t have much money either but for a friend in this scenario I’d definitely not want any bitterness between us. I think £40 is well worth avoiding that. If money wasn’t an issue I’d offer to pay the full amount.

Of course you should pay. It was your fault. Do you have personal liability insurance? Claim on that. If you don't, you should.

Yes it's the decent thing and yes she's being a good friend by not asking you. You are not being a good friend by not offering.

Yes of course you should pay for it. If you were in a shop and you smashed something by accident you'd be expected to pay for it. Intent means nothing. You break someone's stuff you pay to fix it.
