To not enjoy my own cooking

Princess1066 · 15/09/2018 21:45

Have just eaten spag bol that I cooked for myself & DS.
I apologised to him as I thought it was tasteless - he told me he really liked it & said he didn't know why I always think my cooking is bad Grin
It occurred to me that I never really enjoy the meals that I make from scratch - anyone else feel the same?
Am spoilt I think too coz my DH is a great cook & actually loves cooking Smile

Not at all UR. I’m sure it’s a psychological thing. I cook loads but I always prefer something cooked by someone else/ bought/ from a restaurant. The latter feels “proper” while mine is just “good enough.”

I think you're right - that's exactly how it feels!

I feel exactly the same OP. My food is always “it’ll fill a hole”. I’m not a good cook, I don’t enjoy cooking.

Lucylugs · 15/09/2018 22:13

Sometimes by the time I've cooked a meal I have no appetite for it. Think it has to do with your sense of smell being a large part of the sense of taste. I'm bored by it by the time it's on the table.

JockTamsonsBairns · 15/09/2018 22:41

I'm a chef, and I'm passionate about cooking and good food. At home though, I seem to lack the remotest of interest. At night, I regularly eat toast, or even the occasional Pot Noodle. It's shit, but by the time I get home I just can't be arsed.

Princess1066 · 15/09/2018 23:11

Good to know I'm not alone - thanks for the replies Smile

Omg! You must be the fly on my wall! I've just spent the last two days trying to explain this to OH!

I hate eating food that I've cooked. Everyone I know loves my food and I'm really good at cooking but I just cannot bring myself to eat whatever I've cooked.

But I'm so hungry by the end of it and I opt for the junk food in the house! And like a PP said toast!

When you've found a solution to this problem please let me know!

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 15/09/2018 23:32

Nah, you’re obviously just a shite cook! 🤣

Princess1066 · 16/09/2018 00:05

100% YANBU I also cook for a living and have had enough compliments to know I don’t suck at it, am rarely interested in eating what I’ve been cooking (with the exception of pudding 😳) luckily DH does most of the cooking at home and is good at it!

MattLeBlancVest · 16/09/2018 01:45

I'm the same, I just think that I'm bored of it by the time it's ready and "go past it"

SpoonBlender · 16/09/2018 02:00

Yeah, I think most people get this don't they? I'm pretty sure Lucy is spot on, your nose gets bored of smells if it's being constantly bombarded and that's exactly what you get from slaving over a hot stove. By the time it's ready for eating, you can barely taste it.

Which is why leftovers are great! And also why things like roasts still work, their smell has been partly locked away while it cooks.

AsleepAllDay · 16/09/2018 02:41

My mum says the same! And she's a brilliant cook & a whiz at desserts, but she says she doesn't like eating any of it

SaltyPeanut · 16/09/2018 02:44

Same here, I personally find the allure of a beef stew greatly diminished by being the one who has to trim all the fat/gristle/arteries/connective tissue out of the raw beef with it's attendant visuals and smell. Being the one to remove all the shitty bits from the vegetables, check pulses and grains for foreign bodies also not appetite stimulants. Then there are the myriad of weird smells that emanate at various stages of doneness. Is it just my flat where there can be a nice smell in the kitchen but other rooms smell of various rancid partial stale components of the whole smell present in the kitchen.

Others lap up my cooking. I sometimes struggle to swallow it without throwing up by the time I've finished cooking it. I have been known to give up trying and just have a tin of rice pudding or toast for dinner while watching DH relishing some vegetable and/or meat concoction and fresh baked bread I've spent hours cooking.

Not trying to be boastful but I am one heck of a baker but I often struggle to enjoy my fresh bread after smelling the rotton front bottom like warm yeasty stink while mixing and kneading. I enjoy DH's fresh bread more even though he is not brilliant at it because I haven't had to smell it uncooked.

What can I say, human weirdness can be hard to wrap your head around sometimes. I think this might be one of those little weird things for some people.

Moononthehill28 · 16/09/2018 03:43

Feel exactly the same

whiteroseredrose · 16/09/2018 07:28

Me too. Actually I hate cooking as well but I'm the one that cooks as DH works late. I'd much rather come home and have hummus, pitta, salad etc and be done with it.

speakout · 16/09/2018 07:44

I am the same OP.

And OH is too- we are both decent cooks ( OH used to be a chef)
We enjoy each other's meals, but eating stuff you make yourself is odd. OH and I have discussed this too.
I can make something- I know it is good, others devour it and ask for seconds, but I feel too "connected" to it to enjoy it. I "know " it too well, I can discern every element, taste every pert of the seasoning, maybe a bit judgemental- too much cumin, not enough pepper etc type of way.
I much prefer eating stuff other people has cooked- I prefer eating food my OH has cooked, and he prefers eating food I have cooked.

Very strange

Twotailed · 16/09/2018 07:46

I’m the opposite Grin I prefer my own cooking to most other people’s
