Neighbour Doing Noisy DIY - What's an acceptable time?

I know laws and ordinances about noise vary depending on where you live, but I'm getting sick of my neighbour's noisy DIY (drilling, hammering, etc.) in the evenings and during the weekend.

In the years I've known him, he's always preferred to do everything himself rather than hire someone, so he has to fit his DIY around work. Fair enough, but he's currently adding a small extension to the back of the house...so it's been going on for weeks. We're attached and hear everything.

It's really the weekend mornings that bother me - OK, it's not at 6 a.m on Saturday, but I don't really want to hear his drill at 8 a.m. either, nor in the evenings.

Not unreasonable. There are laws regarding noise, you need to contact your council and find out what they are.

I've been looking it up and I think it's no noise from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
In reality, though, I wouldn't cut my grass at 9 a.m. on the weekend as I know some neighbours will be having a lie-in!

I don't want to fall out with him, he's a bit awkward to deal with at the best of times. Confused.
