Toaster on or off?

abacucat · 14/09/2018 14:15

My DP and I disagree about whether when the toaster is not being used, it should be switched off or on at the plug. I say it should be switched off. DP says it doesn't matter and usually leaves it on. So who is right?

I put mine away in a cupboard which sort of supports you!

LoveAGoodChat · 14/09/2018 14:17

Switched off of course, why on earth would he want to leave it on at the plug?..using his logic would he leave the microwave , kettle and cooker switched on too when not in use?

Nothisispatrick · 14/09/2018 14:17

Why would you switch it off at the plug? What does it achieve?

ButFirstTea · 14/09/2018 14:17

I always leave it on, same with the kettle!

Holidayfromreal · 14/09/2018 14:17

I've never switched my toaster off at the plug and don't really see the point. Can't remember last time any one I knew toaster spontaneously combusted.

Nothisispatrick · 14/09/2018 14:18

LoveAGoodChat

I can’t tell if that post is sarcastic? I don’t know anyone who switches those things off at the plug between uses.

SneakyGremlins · 14/09/2018 14:18

On Confused

abacucat · 14/09/2018 14:18

I think it is a fire hazard being left on at the plug. I leave the microwave switched on at the plug though.

All my appliances are left on and plugged in. Didnt realise that was odd.

Layoverlife · 14/09/2018 14:19

Switched off, that's the case with all electrical equipment in my house.
Why waste or pay for electricity you're not using? And I just think it's safer switching things off when not in use Smile

Lazypuppy · 14/09/2018 14:19

I never switch any appliances off

CatLadyToddlerMother · 14/09/2018 14:20

I unplug mine, infact I unplug all appliances except for the fridge, the washing machine and the hob/oven

RestingBitchFaced · 14/09/2018 14:20

I always turn off at plug, my SIL's toaster caught fire when left plugged in once so now I would always do it

Fevertree · 14/09/2018 14:21

My mum's toaster set on fire one day when not in use. She and my h always turn my toaster off at the plug when not in use. It gives me the rage though when I put my bread in and it pops back up Angry

Always leave kettle, microwave and oven on though!

QueenCity · 14/09/2018 14:21

Switched on unless we are going away in which case we switch everything off.

Lycrasock · 14/09/2018 14:22

Switched off, that's the case with all electrical equipment in my house.
Why waste or pay for electricity you're not using?

How on earth would any electricity be wasted or used by the toaster when it is not on?

DamsonWhine · 14/09/2018 14:23

Why waste or pay for electricity you're not using?

But you’re not using it if you’re not actually toasting anything Confused

ifoundthebread · 14/09/2018 14:23

My oven is switched off at the wall between uses as my dds has to pass through the kitchen/diner to get to her toy room in the conservatory and I don't want to risk a 3 year old getting curious and playing with knobs. But kettle and toaster are left on as she can't reach them

GrumpyOlderBloke · 14/09/2018 14:24

Doubtless my grandmother would have switched it off at the socket - if she had owned one.

Just as she would turn off the ceiling light if one of the bulbs failed.

She didn't want the electricity to leak out.

LusaCole · 14/09/2018 14:25

I leave kettle, toaster, microwave, oven etc all on at the plug. It doesn’t use any electricity if it’s not in use. I guess there is a very tiny fire hazard but it’s honestly not worth worrying about unless your wiring is old and dodgy.

FittonTower · 14/09/2018 14:25

The only time I unplug my toaster is when i want to plug in the blender (small kitchen!). I don't unplug anything though, fridge, telly, sky box, microwave - everything stays plugged in....

abacucat · 14/09/2018 14:41

So sounds like DP is right to say it doesn't matter?

OP posts:
GrumpyOlderBloke · 14/09/2018 14:46

@abacucat - 'fraid so. He won't gloat though - too much.

seventhgonickname · 14/09/2018 14:47

I'm another who shoves it in a cupboard when not in use.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 14/09/2018 14:49

Those of you popping it in a cup board - do the crumbs not go everywhere? Even with expensive toasters, even if I regularly “empty” then, if they get moved there are crumbs everywhere!
