To think it's too early to start selling poppies?

On my way to work today, walking out of the train station I was greeted by about 5 or 6 people selling poppies ahead of Remembrance Day.

Which is almost two months away.

AIBU to think it's a bit bonkers selling them this early? I hate the guilty feeling I get every time I walk past and don't buy one (I will eventually, just they seem to fall off after 5 minutes so I don't see the point of getting one yet).

Really? They usually launch about 24 October (I am in England, not sure if Poppy Scotland does something different).

But yes, I think it is bonkers regardless of where you are in the UK.

That's pretty early, the RBL poppy appeal does not start until October 25th, are you sure they are official sellers, it sounds pretty dodgy if I'm honest. Confused

CatsAreMyAesthetic · 13/09/2018 14:59

Erm I'm not sure I'd say it was a bad thing given its collecting money for a cause. I think if you just buy one and wear it when you go out they'll see you already have one? Not that you need one anyway if you don't want?.. it's all for the same cause so just buy one elsewhere I guess Flowers

"Too" early?
Too early for Xmas stuff in August; too early for poppies in September; too early for Halloween stuff ever; too early for creme eggs in January...

If it really were too early, people wouldn't buy them, and retailers would not sell them.

If they are selling this early, they are not official poppy sellers report to the police please.

MrsJayy · 13/09/2018 15:10

I would report to the council tbh launch is mid october they are probably scammers Angry

MrsJayy · 13/09/2018 15:13

RbL is 25th of october Poppy Scotland is the 29th

TooManyPaws · 13/09/2018 15:16

Apart from the online RBL and Poppy Scotland sites, the only thing that I am aware of is that Pets At Home are currently selling dog poppy collar charms for the above charities. Presumably early because people don't go in that often.

Catscakeandchocolate · 13/09/2018 15:16

Was this at Liverpool street by any chance? It was actually the army raising funds for ex service people and you got a red wristband instead of a poppy. I did a double take and then read the sign properly and gave them all my coins. It did at a glance look like the poppy appeal.

Pamdoo · 13/09/2018 15:20

They started at my local Sainsbury's a few weeks ago!

Pamdoo · 13/09/2018 15:22

And they were the official ones as I recognised them from last year, an elderly couple

MrsJayy · 13/09/2018 15:32

Maybe the launch days are just offical days and it is started way too early

AngeloMysterioso · 13/09/2018 17:31

Ahhh Catscake you are correct, was indeed Liv St!

I thought they were collecting in Glasgow central for poppy Scotland but it was RAF 100. A similar badge commemorating 100 years of RAF.

Fluffyears · 13/09/2018 17:51

Quite similar

To think it's too early to start selling poppies?

I'm an official poppy seller and you an sell them anytime. I attended an event in June and had a stall, we have just had one at a carnival and are having one at a celebration event for raf 100 next weekend.

We have been provided with limited edition pins (all sellers) to sell this year and we are pushing sales of that and they products already.

There is an official launch date for the main appeal but we are encouraged to sell all hearts round.

Chances are there was something they were attending that day or an event what was on so that's why they did it.

It's never too early to sell poppies and raise funds for service men and women!

happinessiseggshaped · 13/09/2018 18:08

It will be a much bigger thing this year with the centenary anyway. No surprise if people are starting earlier.
