I've fallen out with SIL over minor things over the years, but recently we've reached a bit of a stand off over something much more major. I can't see us rebuilding our relationship beyond pleasantries and it set me off wondering why so many people struggle with SILs. I don't think it's a competitive thing and can see lots of advantages to SILs being close but it seems rare.
