I feel that I'm stuck in a rut in local government. AIBU to think civil service is a better option?

Stay in local government! Greater scope for innovation and having an impact on real lives!

What kind of role are you in at the moment OP?

MrsGrindah · 12/09/2018 07:14

Civil service less likely to face compulsory redundancy if that’s important to you. Also there’s huge potential to have impact on real lives.....depends which departments and roles interest you.

I'm in local government, across the road from civil service offices. Local gov - secure, safe, but no room for progression or change. Civil service - more opportunities, but local office is closing and moving. There will be redundancies. I'd stay local gov for now.

Mardyarabella - genuinely am keen to know why you think my comment is so hilarious?!

Agree with Mrsgrindah in terms of impact. Progression depends on what area/ role you work in and tbh your politician nous both small and large p

Is there scope to change department within local government? I've swapped a couple of times, it might open up more opportunities?

Personally I'd try and get out of Local Government and into Civil Service.

In my area LG is viewed as being staffed by ancient, lazy, brain dead staff who are in 'a job for life' and have zero motivation with a lot of bullying and weak management too.

Civil service is a good career with better structure and less likely to be 'jobs for the boys' which still goes on in LG.

Civil service. Complete job security where i work, pension, flexi, annual leave work-life balance...i could go on.

The future in local government looks bleak to me. Finance continues to be a major problem. Organizations will merge/downsize to save cash and shed staff. Might be some interesting jobs in making it all happen though.

Civil service has expanded a lot to deal with Brexit. Hard to say where that’s all going! I think you have more opportunities to change things for the better in central government but really it’s likely to be on a national level rather than personal/local. Depends on what you prefer.
