AIBU to wonder what a working family might do / they couldn’t access it.

Other charities? Churches?

Food banks have limited resources and these opening hours sound pretty standard to me.

Lauperr · 09/09/2018 21:30

I run the Foodbank in our town and we're open one day a week currently, mainly because we're quiet as it's a small town. However, if someone got in touch and was unable to come during usual opening hours I would, and have, dropped off food parcels or arranged to meet them at a more convenient time.
Unfortunately Foodbanks are volunteer run so can only operate during the hours volunteers are available.

FannyOutOfTheFarawayTree · 09/09/2018 21:32

These are not a government service. They are people like you giving up their time when they can to help those in need.

Ragwort · 09/09/2018 21:35

Agree with previous posters, Food Banks are run by volunteers. I am involved with a local Food Bank & if someone is unable to visit during our normal opening hours we will make every effort to meet at a different time or do a home delivery.

weloveheyduggee · 09/09/2018 21:35

Also involved with food banks- we actually have some local fire stations hold food parcels for us for weekends and bank holidays.

Dermymc · 09/09/2018 21:37

They are run by volunteers!!

LittleOwl153 · 09/09/2018 21:37

I am involved in running a foodbanks. Ours runs 4 mornings. Tues, Thurs, Fri, sat. Saturday's is the least attended. Normally one 1 or 2 clients turn up - we use the time to sort the store as it is day more for donations than collections!
Foodbanks are all volunteers- and most do their best to work around someone who can't get to the venue for whatever reason.

carmelsundae · 09/09/2018 21:38

Yup, we run one from our church - two days a week! It's ran by volunteers of the church, most who also work and 2 days is all we can sustain. We try to accommodate all referrals though, however it's like everything - only so many people volunteer!

NewYearNewMe18 · 09/09/2018 21:40

Perhaps you could offer to staff it on the other days ?

WitchDancer · 09/09/2018 21:42

I volunteer at a food bank too, which opens one day a week. There are plenty of food banks in the area, which have staggered days so there is always somewhere they can 'cash in' their vouchers.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 09/09/2018 21:46

I volunteer for a Foodbank. We operate 2 afternoons and 1 evening per week. We have barely enough volunteers to operate the hours that we do. The vast majority of foodbanks rely on volunteers and can only do so much.

Go to another one?

What is it that you think the food bank should do?

continuallychargingmyphone · 09/09/2018 22:26

I actually looked into volunteering for one but can’t because I’m at work.

I’m asking on here butchy as I genuinely do not know, it isn’t a loaded or trick question.

OP posts:
ShatnersBassoon · 09/09/2018 22:35

That's standard. It would be impossible to have sufficient volunteers to run convenience store hours.

Sarahandduck18 · 09/09/2018 23:03

I imagine it’s very rare for someone who is working to use one.

continuallychargingmyphone · 09/09/2018 23:08

I don’t think it is as rare as all that sarah Sad

continuallychargingmyphone why don't you write to your MP, it's a real problem and only seems to be getting worse.

Ragwort · 10/09/2018 20:34

Are you asking a theoretical question or do you, or someone you know, need to access a Food bank 'out of opening hours'? As many of us on this thread have said, I am sure if you contact your local Food Bank they will do whatever they can to arrange a delivery/collection at a convenient time.
