To absolutely detest air conditioning

Fair enough I was glad of it during the very hot spell this summer but it’s back to normal temperatures now and I don’t think it’s necessary. I’ve just sat on a Eurostar train for 3 hours absolutely freezing and it’s a horrible kind of cold, really unnatural. My office is just as bad - what’s wrong with just opening a window ffs?

Maybe it’s just london, but anywhere I’ve worked the windows don’t open - partly for security, partly to stop accidents/people from jumping, I think!

MaisyPops · 08/09/2018 16:19

I dislike aircon obsessives and heating obsessives.

Unless it's boiling hot or freezing cold then people should be more than capable of dressing to regulate their temperature.

DunesOfSand · 08/09/2018 16:24

A.C. has its place.
UK seems to be mid-high teens at the monent. Absolutely no need for AC if you have some air movement going on.
On the other hand, if I opened the windows, the house temp would go up from about 25 C to 40C. I wouldnt want to be here without AC.

Sparklesocks · 08/09/2018 16:26

The Eurostar probably has air con because of all the many warm bodies in a confined space adding to the temperature, but yes I agree it’s very annoying when on too high.

PinkLady01 · 08/09/2018 17:07

I live in a southern state and AC is one of the things I’m most thankful for Grin but I still have a cardigan for when it gets too cold obviously

LoniceraJaponica · 08/09/2018 17:33

I agree. I find trains and aeroplanes rather cold, and dress accordingly. The temperature at work has been freezing during the hot weather because the aircon was turned up too high. It is warmer at work now evn though the outside temperature has dropped by about 10 - 12 degrees.

easyandy101 · 08/09/2018 17:37

The UK is uniquely awful at ac

BarbaraofSevillle · 08/09/2018 17:38

I don't like how the aircon is turned up ridiculously high so it's freezing cold when they have it. Like many supermarkets, so on a hot day, you go inside wearing light clothing and it's absolutely freezing and all the staff are wearing fleeces. Terrible for the environment to cool it down to freezing, it just needs to be down to about 22 C, not 17 ffs.

Pinkywoo · 08/09/2018 17:38

I hate it in cinemas, I'm always freezing!

Sorry10 · 08/09/2018 17:42

Working in a extremely hot office during the heatwave that got to 30+ degrees I resolved never to complain about being cold again( how long that will last though)
You can always cover up but when it's too hot not much you can do .

puzzledlady · 08/09/2018 17:44

When you live in parts of Asia or the Middle East - you will think very differently of air conditioning.

missmouse101 · 08/09/2018 17:44

Why do people use the word ‘freezing’? They mean ‘cold’ or ‘cooler’ surely? No need to exaggerate.

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/09/2018 17:48

I swear it makes me ill.
Its also kind of odd in hot countries when you're in a shop and so cold you shiver.
I travelled around SE ASIA on buses and every time they stopped the whole bus would het off to warm up.
My friend and I would snuggle up together and wear as many clothes as we could fit on.

LoniceraJaponica · 08/09/2018 17:53

"Why do people use the word ‘freezing’? They mean ‘cold’ or ‘cooler’ surely? No need to exaggerate."

Because I can't function when I am cold, so I am prone to exaggeration Grin

I would go and sit outside at lunchtime during the summer just to warm up.

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/09/2018 17:56

I also don't cope with cold, I've been known to cry when I'm too cold.

QuestionableMouse · 08/09/2018 17:57

I'm really glad of it at work. Horrid polyester uniform, hot kitchen and loads of glass means that it can be really hot without it.

IrenetheQuaint · 08/09/2018 17:59

Yes, AC is totally overused in this country. So wasteful too.

LoniceraJaponica · 08/09/2018 18:00

I agree that it is necessary in a kitchen. I sit down at a desk all day. Aircon is not needed most of the time. We have windows that open.

EnormousDormouse · 08/09/2018 18:02

I need mine! (Middle East)- I keep it at about 28° though so not too cool.
It's mid 30s outside and can go up to nearly 50° in the middle of summer.
If I go to the cinema I have to take socks and scarves as it's so chilly.

Purpleartichoke · 08/09/2018 18:03

I break out in hives in warm spaces or warm weather. It is a miserable existence. Air conditioning is probably the greatest thing ever invented for people like me. I’m honestly not sure I would still be alive without it. It also makes lots of people more comfortable. Another great invention is the sweater. It also makes lots of people more comfortable. Amazing world we live in with both available.

whyhaveidonethis · 08/09/2018 18:03

This is a real bug bear of mine. People who love air conditioning seem to like the temperature to be around 17° which, for a skinny runt like me is bloody freezing. Trains and airplanes are awful when they are so cold as is our office. It makes me so miserable and no matter how many layers I wear (in the middle of summer!!) my hands feel icy and I struggle to work.

Why can't it be set at a comfortable temperature for everyone?

whyhaveidonethis · 08/09/2018 18:05

Purpleartichoke obviously I can wear a sweater, it doesn't help the iciness in my hands...would you have me wear gloves in the office in the middle of summer? It's selfish fuckers like you who really piss me off.

Justanotherlurker · 08/09/2018 18:17

Looks like we have 2 extremes on the thread which is played out in pretty much every small medium office in the UK, who will win, Purpleartichoke or whyhaveidonethis

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/09/2018 18:26

I remember reading in my SE Asia Lonely Planet back then that the buses have two settings for the air con- bloody freezing and suspended animation.

Copperbonnet · 08/09/2018 18:29

I live in Southern Texas. Without aircon I’d struggle to survive the summer, or in fact for most of the year.
