... all the online photos of "book"shelves are dressed with vases, photos and other nick-nacks, rather than books.

I want a large shelf unit for books, DVDs and playstation games, and I'm trying to find something relatively stylish online, but can only find minimalist photos with hardly a book in sight. If you have a favourite set of bookshelves that can be filled with books and still look good, please point me in the right direction!

Ikea Billy every time for me...I have a lot of books. Simple, functional, holds a lot of books.

I would always look on eBay for something like that.
You're more likely to see a real range of pieces, and something fab will jump out at you.
Obviously it will be cheaper than buying new, older good quality furniture is given away on eBay even compared to the price of Ikea tat.
Plus I love that an object doesn't end up in landfill, and also I'm not fuelling more consumerism.
My house looks very stylish, smart and contemporary with its mix of inherited pieces, bits from my travels, eBay finds etc even if I say so myself People who come to my house for the first time are always super surprised because I'm quite a scruffy dresser 90% of the time, and I think they think my house will be scruffy too Grin

We had bookshelves built and fitted.

My friend, on seeing them for the first time said, "I love your bookshelves but I wouldn't have put books on them."

I said Confused "what would you have put on them?"

She said "oh I don't know, anything but books!"

Ikea Billy here too. Strong, huge, nice depth, holds hundreds of books (and other things). I have my office kitted out in a variety of white ones and it looks fab, like a bespoke made office.
