to be confused about child benefit?

If my DC has a child from a previous relationship, but doesn't claim any child benefit, does this effect how much child benefit I can claim for my child once they are born?

I'm really confused by the whole thing...

*DP not DC!

No you'll still get child benefit. Nothing to do with your partners other child

I don’t think so. I’m guessing the child’s other parent claims Child benefit for him/her?

Although even if your DP did claim it you would still be able to claim for your baby as the limit is two children. You would just get £13 and some change per week instead of the £20ish.

Thanks @Mammaof - I'm tired. Can't get my head round it all... someone needs to make a list of everything we need to think about!

@IfIWasABirdIdFlyIn2ACeilingFan his ex claims it and he doesn't claim anything. I was banking on the £80 a month to go towards childcare costs. Just wanted to make sure I can claim it even though he has a child already. He doesn't claim anything for her though!

Its your first child and you are the claimant, so you will get the first child rate, subject to earnings, of course.

IfIWasABirdIdFlyIn2ACeilingFan · 06/09/2018 23:45

In that case you’ll get The £80

Cranberri · 06/09/2018 23:47

I feel so thick trying to work it all out 🙈

IfIWasABirdIdFlyIn2ACeilingFan, there isn't a limit on how many children you can claim child benefit for.

OP, if you haven't picked a name and there might be a delay in getting the Birth Certificate, then claim as soon as s/he is born. They only backdate three months. You can send the BC, later on.

IfIWasABirdIdFlyIn2ACeilingFan · 06/09/2018 23:54

Ahh don’t worry. Just apply for whatever you need and they’ll work out what you’re entitled too. But right now, you go to bed! Grin

IfIWasABirdIdFlyIn2ACeilingFan · 06/09/2018 23:55

birds really? I thought it was two children?

anitagreen · 07/09/2018 00:03

The two child limit only applies to tax credits child benefit is normal

Cranberri · 07/09/2018 00:06

I think I mean tax credits... I don't even know if I qualify for child benefit! I don't think I do...

OP posts:
Astrid2 · 07/09/2018 00:12

Everyone is entitled to child benefit OP but tax credits are means tested! I got confused when I was applying too!

Cranberri · 07/09/2018 00:19

Oh man. So confused!

OP posts:
AornisHades · 07/09/2018 00:20

Do either of you earn more than 50K? If not then you can claim child benefit with no tax implications. You should get the amount for a first child if you claim.
Tax credits are more complicated.

IfIWasABirdIdFlyIn2ACeilingFan · 07/09/2018 09:29

Oh thanks anita! I thought it was everything.

OP there is a website called “entitled to” where you can put in all your details and it will tell you what you’re entitled to.
