I follow a celeb on Instagram and she recently was looking for recommendations on bedroom furniture. Today on her feed there are pictures of new furniture with a tag of who sent it to her it's got paid in partnership with and ad at the bottom and she clearly states she never got paid she just likes to receive free things...AIBU to be pissed off that people who clearly have enough money get stuff get it for free!! I am jealous btw.

You are not BU to want free things we all would love that!

Would you really like that superficial lifestyle though? It doesn’t last in a few years they will be left with nothing.

I am glad to work a honest days work in a job I love to come home to a nice house where everything is paid for by me.

Its cheap advertising that targets morons

Anxious2niteaaah · 06/09/2018 06:00

They get it because the companies want free advertising, when the celebrations tweets about it or posts about it on Instagram or Facebook or mentions it in an interview etc the company gets a mention to a large audience (free advertising) and they hope that fans will want to copy the celeb and buy one for themselves..

And I imagine the celebrities don't mind either, free stuff for just posting about it on social media is a win win for them too...

If you are envious why not start your own Instagram account or YouTube blogger, build up a following (may take time depending on your content) as a vlogger/influencer and companies will start to send you some free stuff too for a mention in your social media..

It's advertising for the company at what I would imagine is a greatly reduced cost compared to actually hiring said celebrity to do a paid ad. 🤷

You're not being unreasonable to want stuff for free; who wouldn't?

knishFromARose · 06/09/2018 06:10

I think you're unreasonable simply because it's part of their job. They cultivate a persona / character / celebrity status and this is payment for a part of that; using their fame to advertise.

Not all payment is cash.

It's often the people who need least who get most. Those with a lot of money are likely to continue to earn most etc.

Nothing's for free. They will expect quite a bit of publicity. Also, often times with big ticket items they have to give it back. Oscar dresses, jewelry, cars, etc, most of that goes back and is later auctioned off by the "gifter".
