To ask which job you'd go for

I'm a newly single parent trying to get myself sorted. I've had a few jobs since splitting but not found one that fits well around dc and gives me enough money to get by on.

So there are a few in the pipeline. Here are the pros and cons.

  1. pro- local, manageable in bad weather, have worked there before and it's not bad, nice team of folk. Cons- only 8.50 an hour, zero hours contract, it's not in my 'field" but maybe easiest whilst i have young dc.
  2. Pro- it's 10.76 an hour, in a similar field to pre dc career or at least degree qualified me to do it. New thing. I'm interested in it. Cons- it's in town (40min drive) it's on a weekend so would have to rely on ex to be there for dc (currently he is very difficult) although friends have offered (big ask? All day sat?) Parking costs £4 in town. Haven't worked there before so it's all unknown quantity.
  3. cons - it's apparently a 'lovely" place to work. It's set hours each week. It's food related and whilst not my field I am a massive foodie/love baking etc. It's also around £10 an hour. Cons- its up a road that would be lethal in winter if we have snow, which we often do. I'm not sure there would be any craic, think meditation centre type environment.

AIBU to ask you to choose which one I should go for ?

(1) sorry

inmyshoos · 05/09/2018 14:18

Don't be sorry, thank you for answering!

If I just have a job that fits around the dc I'd be lucky enough with THAT alone

(2) sounds like a better job for you but unmanageable stress :(

WhatHaveIFound · 05/09/2018 14:32
  1. sounds like it could be good for you. Is there somewhere you could leave your car to walk the last bit of the journey? What about school closures during bad? Would your ex or a friend be able to pick DC up in an emergency?

Otherwise i'd go for 1) because i wouldn't want to only be able to spend 1 day a week (Sunday) with my DC.

WhatHaveIFound · 05/09/2018 14:33

shoud be 'bad weather' not just bad!

inmyshoos · 05/09/2018 14:33

Yes and I have so much of that just now I really don't want more.
I'm applying for them all so fate will play it's hand I suppose!

3

AspieHere · 05/09/2018 15:44

3 definitely. Look at it as a stop gap whilst they are young.
1 if I had to.
2 not at all.

Bellyscreen · 05/09/2018 15:54

3 sounds good - what are the chances of bad weather? And surely the bad road would affect everyone who works there, not just you? I don’t like the idea of a zero hours contract so I wouldn’t be too keen on 1. And 2 sounds tricky with childcare.

inmyshoos · 05/09/2018 17:18

Unfortunately where we live there is a high chance of bad weather. We still had snow in April this year!!
It would affect everyone but those travelling from town less so, I'd be coming in the opposite direction as I am very rural but on the flat. This place is up on a hill.
I've applied for all 3 so will see what happens.

2 is actually the one that interests me most. Purely because it's related to what I did pre dc and feels quite 'me'.
3 is appealing but I'm slightly intimidated by it, the type of place it is isn't really me although I do think it's probably a lovely place to work.

  1. Wouldn't consider 2 as don't have firm childcare. Wouldn't take a zero hour contract.
TheHonGalahadThreepwood · 05/09/2018 18:03

I'd go for 3 and, if the content or atmosphere didn't suit, look at moving on to another job after a bit. Wouldn't take 1 due to poor pay and contract, and wouldn't take 2 because of childcare stress and concern over never getting to see the DC for some relaxed weekend time (assuming they're school age and you don't see them all day every day!)

3

I wouldn't consider 2 at all.
