Sorry to post on here I know it’s not really an AIBU but I need the traffic.
I have to go out in 2hrs won’t be home til gone 7 tonight so planned to do a slow cooked lamb dish.
Use by date is the 3rd, normally I just go by how it looks and smells and don’t pay them much attention. The lamb looks fine but it smells a bit cheesy, kind of like wotsits! I’m not sure if this is because it’s gone bad or if it’s because it’s was vacuumed sealed.
Kids will be eating it too so not sure if I should risk it, I’m loathed to throw out almost £10 worth of meat though.

I probably wouldn't risk it because it smells bad and it's meat so you could all get really sick

Check again in 20 minutes after you've taken it out of the packaging. If it still smells off, then I'd bin. Lamb can smell stronger than some other meats anyway, but the vacuum sealing definitely doesn't help.

Smell again in 5 minutes - if it is just the vacuum packaging then the smell will have gone. I don't worry about sell by dates - but even I would avoid if it still smells cheesy Shock

What cut is it? Wash it under a cold tap and smell it again. You can always cut away the surface if you're unsure - the rest will be fine. I would only not prepare it if it smells rotten.
