To buy a maternity top when I'm not pregnant?

Looking for a nice new top & like absolutely 0 unless you like having your mid riff out. (New fashion apparently) except I do like... a maternity top. Will it really have a huge bulging bump area? Or just be a bit loose fitted? Can't help but think it'll flow over the pouch the 1 year old left behind!

Have you tried it on? Massively loose clothes can make you look bigger than you actually are, so I'd advise against it.

I bought some nursing/maternity dresses post pregnancy when I’d established breastfeeding.

They are flattering but maybe make me look slightly pregnant still. So if you don’t mind that look go for it!

I’ve worn my maternity tops too which are nice and long but stretchy so not too baggy in the stomach area.

Haven't tried it on no, it's online! @Neverender let me get a photo...

I think maternity clothes are designed to make the bump look obvious so it might make you look pregnant.

This is it... I'm a size 10 so I'm not MASSIVE but size 10 tops just cling to my middle & anything bigger looks over sized in the arm/shoulder/boob department. Thinking if I don't have a big pregnant bump this will just hang loosely around my tummy... or potentially stick out making me look pregnant I just don't know! Only a tenner... might risk it.

Order it and try it on. If it's not flattering, send it back.

I spotted maternity tights on the John Lewis website earlier and might get some, as tights never seem to fit my (not pregnant) tummy!

You need to plug your phone in asap

MrsStrowman · 04/09/2018 22:09

Maybe buy a size smaller?

Beautifulblue · 04/09/2018 22:09

@Brambleboo good call, the tights seems like a no brainer! Give it a go.

@Deshasafraisy 10% now & on the up Smile

@MrsStrowman yes did consider that! Not sure if that'll make the tummy area smaller or just the arms/shoulders etc... might order in 8 & 10 and just send back.

I really, really wouldn't but buy something beautiful and flattering that you will feel comfortable in. I wore maternity clothes for a while after DD was born and afterwards started wearing 'normal' clothes. It was apparently very obvious. As soon as I stopped, my sister exclaimed, "Oh,cool, you're wearing normal clothes again!"

Neverender · 04/09/2018 22:13

You will feel comfortable but will look enormous. Can you find a pretty empire line top?

Dancer12345 · 04/09/2018 22:24

I did it once totally by mistake. Had been wearing the top for ages before I realised it was a maternity one! It was quite fitted though and without much stretch, so I’m not sure how it would actually work with a bump!
I think the style in your picture may stick out though. You could try it though.

ReasonableLlama · 04/09/2018 22:28

Won't the front of it dip down so that if there was a baby bump the hem line is the same all the way round? A lot of my maternity dresses were like that
