Mallet finger or something else?

Posting for traffic

A couple of weeks ago I woke up with a very sore and bent finger. Over the last few days it's become less sore, but is still bent. On a scale of one to ten it's like a two or three pain wise now. But it's still bent, or swollen, or both?! I live very really so minor injuries is a pain (3 hour round trip). Just wondered if anyone recognised the symptoms I guess.

Mallet finger or something else?

And yes, there may have been alcohol involved Grin

Can you straighten it?

ElainaElephant · 02/09/2018 10:46

I had mallet finger, and it wasn't swollen or sore, but I guess that depends on how it happens. Mine looked more bent, but it could not straighten at all.

Sparklfairy · 02/09/2018 10:47

Yeah when I push with my thumb it straightens, with no pain, but the bump is still on the top iyswim, that's why I don't think it's mallet finger.

But you can't straighten it without pushing it? Could be mallet finger. I had to wear a split for 12 weeks, 8 weeks full time, 4 weeks when I was doing things that could damage it.

Good as new now. In fact it's straighter than my other fingers lol

ElainaElephant · 02/09/2018 10:49

But as I said, my finger was more bent.

ElainaElephant · 02/09/2018 10:50

Get it seen to ASAP. The sooner its in a splint the better chances of it healing, if it is mallet finger.

Sparklfairy · 02/09/2018 10:51

No can't straighten it without pushing it. It's the lack of pain that's throwing me. That went after about 5 days. It looks awful though. Like arthritis but I'm only 30 haha

I think it looks like Mallet finger (from experience of DC having it) and agree, the sooner you get it seen to and in the right splint, the better

ElainaElephant · 02/09/2018 10:55

I had no pain at all with mallet finger.

ElainaElephant · 02/09/2018 10:56

And if it helps, I was given the splint and tape, and left to get on with it, with no need to follow up, so the sooner you get it splinted, the more likely it will heal and the less likely you'll need to go back.

DH had mallet finger, he had no pain but his finger looked floppier* than yours.

  • not a medical term afaik
HPandBaconSandwiches · 02/09/2018 10:58

If you can’t straighten it without pushing it up that’s because you’ve ruptured or damaged the tendon. If you want it to work properly in the future, go and get it treated.

Sparklfairy · 02/09/2018 10:59

It just doesn't seem bent 'enough'! Argh goes I'll have to go into minor injuries tomorrow.

dentie · 02/09/2018 11:06

I would strap it up meantime

Mookatron · 02/09/2018 11:30

I'm not sure what mallet finger is, but my finger did this when I'd snapped the tendon. Go for treatment.

ElainaElephant · 02/09/2018 13:16

Mookatron, that's exactly what mallet finger is.

Mookatron · 02/09/2018 16:21

Oh! Thanks. I'm a bit annoyed I didn't know this at the time!

Sparklfairy · 02/09/2018 18:18

Yeah Im gonna have to go to miu
