Apart from a fling straight after we Split, I have not had any sex!!!! Apparently these diseases can lay dormant for years. Am totally bricking it !!!! Have to my 2 DC + friends to a party this evening so need to paint on my HAPPY FACE.... Shit shit shit !!! If to wait up to 2 weeks for a colosvopy and am losing it already . Anyone had similar smear test results????? Bloody scared right now

Please don't worry. I also tested positive HPV and with abnormal cells last year.
Ironically I had been celibate for 2 years!!!
I had to have a colcoscopy and I was terrified as I find smears a challenge but it was ok mainly down to the great care I received.
My results came back low risk and I just had a clear smear test last month. I will have them yearly which is quite reassuring.
I know it's hard not to worry but I wasted hours of my life worrying to no purpose!

Sidalee7 · 01/09/2018 17:57

Oh and while HPV is passed by sexual intercourse it is not a typical STI. My doctor said everyone has it at some point and to think of it as your cervix catching a cold!

Sunshinegirl82 · 01/09/2018 17:58

Don't panic. I had several smears with abnormal cells and have had several colposcopies. They are no big deal.

On each occasion I had a spot biopsy done but I have never needed treatment. If you do need treatment it's quite a straightforward if the abnormal cells are caught early.

I had 6 monthly smears for a few years but am now back to 3 yearly and last few have been normal.

The chances are this will be nothing more than a minor inconvenience but obviously make sure you get properly checked out. Good luck!

3WildOnes · 01/09/2018 18:00

It’s pretty common and nothing to worry about. I’ve had abnormal smears twice. Once was CIN 2, which cleared up on its own, the other time was CIN 3 and I was treated and it has now gone away. A few of my friends have had similar, it’s not at all uncommon and the vast majority of the time it is treated and everything is fine.

doublehelix · 01/09/2018 18:00

Low grade dyskaryosis is NOT cancer. It might develop into it if left there for years but not weeks.

You need the colposcopy but doesn't need to be a big stress. You can put your happy face back on!

BigBlueBubble · 01/09/2018 18:01

It is NOT cancer. It’s minor abnormalities that may eventually lead to cancer if left untreated (and could just as easily go away by itself but they won’t take that risk). Worst case scenario, they will laser or chop it off. It’s no big deal, it happens a lot.

SinkGirl · 01/09/2018 18:01

The percentage of women with HPV is absolutely staggering. I had grade I cell changes at a biopsy 13 years ago and then clear smears ever since (although mine is really overdue now so I need to sort that out).

Fightthebear · 01/09/2018 18:03

Most sexually active people have the HPV virus at some point, that’s why all teenagers are being vaccinated against it now.

You don’t even need unprotected penetrative sex to pass it on. It’s not a big deal itself but can cause changes to the cervical cells.

Lululemonade · 01/09/2018 18:04

I had this sort of result earlier this year. I had the colposcopy (which was no where near as bad as I thought) and then had another appointment to have the cells removed which didn’t hurt at all and now they have gone.
I was so worried that it meant I had cancer but what it means is that your cells have changed and there is a chance that they could become cancerous in time not that you have cancer.
Try not panic, this is exactly why you have smear tests.
After mentioning it to a few of my friends I discovered several of them had had the same thing, just no one ever really talks about it (which is crazy really).

pinkhorse · 01/09/2018 18:04

I have this at every smear test. It's very common. Don't panic.

snowone · 01/09/2018 18:05

Please don't worry OP - the percentage of women over a certain age that are positive for HPV is huge! There is no treatment for us....only vaccination for the younger generation. I've had a couple of colposcopys over the years but have never required any further treatment Smile

HipHipHippo · 01/09/2018 18:05

I had to go for a colposcopy a couple of months ago as my smear results showed dyskaryosis. I ended up having treatment then and there because it was just easier, and all that involved was removing a small part of my cervix.
This was also used as a biopsy. Results came back CIN3 but no cancer.
It sounds a lot scarier than it is, please try not to worry. It was a little uncomfortable, but that's only because I had a chap looking at my bits.

Welliejellie · 01/09/2018 18:13

I have had normal smears every 3 years then my last one I had high grade cell changes and HPV present. Had to have a colposcopy when they looked it was slight cell changes a d no treatment required although I do have to have a smear and colposcopy every 4 months.
Try not to worry op

Welliejellie · 01/09/2018 18:14

Sorry also had biopsy at the same time. All was c!ear there too

Mummyoflittledragon · 01/09/2018 18:30

I had abnormal cells. I had a colposcopy and cells removed (under general anaesthetic) as I also had a laparoscopy. Never had any issues with my cervix after that.

Mummyoflittledragon · 01/09/2018 18:30

Oh and that was over 20 years ago.

DarthLipgloss · 01/09/2018 18:31

Im 47 and had a few abnormal smears in my 20s and was hpv +. I had no treatment and its never been a problem since. Ive had regular normal smears for years.
Its very common, like cold viruses.
Try not to worry x

Squaffle · 01/09/2018 18:35

Don’t worry, I’ve had the same. Regular colposcopies and now all clear, but will have smears at the hospital rather than GP going forward. The doctor I see for colposcopy says he prefers to call HPV ‘sexually activated’ rather than ‘sexually transmitted’, as most sexually active people have it (I think around 90%?) but lots don’t know. Enjoy your evening Smile

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 01/09/2018 18:37

Honestly, don't panic about this. Anyone who has had sex can get this result, which is why we all get tested repeatedly. Most abnormalities would correct themselves without intervention, but they err on the side of over-treating, which does cause anxiety.

If you attend your appointment and follow-up reviews, you will be fine.

I hate that they send letters like this knowing they will arrive on a weekend, when the patient can't call if they are worried.

YogiBear13 · 01/09/2018 18:49

Like most of the other responses, I’ve had this. Went to the colposcopy and it was fine, was sent for another smear test the following year and the low grade cell changes I had had were all gone. My friend also had exactly the same thing, as did my mum and they were both fine, I think it’s really common.

Ignoramusgiganticus · 01/09/2018 18:54

I've had cervical cancer. Low grade dyskaryosis isn't anything to worry about. Enjoy this evening without worrying.
