To call a locksmith (DH wants to drill it instead!)

I've attached a photo of the doorknob on the outside of our bedroom door. For some reason it locked itself and we can't get in. We just moved into the house and don't have a key. We've tried a screwdriver, a paperclip, etc, but haven't been able to get through. DH wants to take a drill to it, but I won't let him. I've called a locksmith who is on his way. I spoke to about 5 locksmiths before I could find one who would come out tonight. His call out fee is £95, plus the cost of replacing the lock. (I did tell him I don't want it replacing with another lock - I just want an ordinary doorknob - but he said the hole in the door will be so large we won't find anything to fit it). DH isn't happy about any of this and is still working on the paperclip, hoping to get it open before the locksmith arrives.

Any advice???

Sorry not helpful Blush

Even if you sort it before locksmith gets there you will still need to pay a call out charge so personally I'd stop wasting my time sorting it and wait for the locksmith.

If it's an internal door I'd try every eventuality before paying £95 for a locksmith to come out.

Bluelady · 29/08/2018 18:08

I'm with your husband, that's going to be a very expensive door knob.

RedneckStumpy · 29/08/2018 18:09

You are willing to pay £95 plus a replacement, when drilling it is free, and probably what the locksmith will do?

Let your DH drill it

RedneckStumpy · 29/08/2018 18:10

Is the bedroom window open, if so borrow a ladder!

Bubblysqueak · 29/08/2018 18:14

But yes I wouldn't have bothered calling a locksmith I would have drilled it.

SassitudeandSparkle · 29/08/2018 18:19

Is the centre a button that may have been pressed - that might be what locked it.

No way would I have called a locksmith out mean he'll drill it out too tbh.

Not sure about drilling it but it be inclined to try the slightly less scientific process of hitting it with a hammer
