To hate interviews

I had an interview today for a job I'd know I could do really well, and I think I'm usually ok at interviews but for some reason I completely messed this one up, couldn't think what to say, just lost my train of thought, if I was on the panel there's no way I'd have picked me.

Just need a moan because I put so much effort in to the application and preparing for the interview but it's all based on a 30 minute interview which didn't give them any indication of how well I could do the job. Feeling rubbish as I though I'd have a good chance of getting it.

Well you never know! It's not over til the gorgeous lady sings, and I've not sung yet Wink (or something like that!!!!!!)

What's meant to be will be ... you might have got the job (yey!), but even if you haven't, something better will be along shortly Wine

RubyWho · 28/08/2018 21:22

I was in this position three weeks ago, worst ever interview of my life and afterwards I decided to cease job hunting for a while because it was too upsetting and exhausting.
Anyway - I ended up getting the job and it cannot have been based on that interview alone!

I hate the pressure of them though, the scrutiny, the “one foot out of place” horror. I know that’s the point of them, but still.

justcontemplatingsomething · 28/08/2018 21:24

Thanks @WarmingUpWithHotCoffee I might believe you if it wasn't for the fact that I've been telling myself for the past few years that everything happens for a reason but I'm now starting to doubt myself.,,,,,,, losing the house we were buying, redundancy, unable to get a decent job......it's all getting me down.

Tell me about it. I have a 2nd interview tomorrow and i just can't be bothered even though i know I can do the job very well. I've been to so many interviews recently and I'm finding they keep hiring internal folk or people who have already don't the job before. Stop wasting my time then! All the time spent researching each company wasted. all the hours of fretting and over thinking it...wasted!
Feeling a bit of dread for tomorrow.

Biut you never know OP. You might be surprised :)

WarmingUpWithHotCoffee · 28/08/2018 21:27

Well with all that bad stuff happening, you are surely due one massive piece of good luck ☘️ Let us know what that good news is when you get it Smile

Don't worry just practice your answers til you've got an off pat 'spiel'. They're very predictable if you're a contractor who does shed loads of the m: as they ask same questions every time. (stength/weakness, how do you deal with demanding people, describe a difficult situation you solved). I just roll out my interview spiel & tailor my personality & tone to their personality. It gives you a bit of a boost if you have that IME.

justcontemplatingsomething · 28/08/2018 21:30

@Whisky2014 good luck for tomorrow! I've another one tomorrow too......

Thank you and good luck to you too!

RedNed · 28/08/2018 21:48

I'm just starting this process again and yes, I hate it 😞

We are moving countries so also have to find a home. I'm trying not to think too deeply about it but I'm rather stressed by it all!

Whisky2014 · 28/08/2018 21:52

I actually don't know why i have a 2nd interview. Although the manager is based in USA and the job is in Scotland so first interview I was sitting with HR whilst we did a phone interview with the manager. The manager is now flying over for the 2nd interiews but i was asked all the normal questions in the first so i dont know what else im to give!

justcontemplatingsomething · 28/08/2018 22:18

What annoys me is that it's often just an exercise in who interviews best, not who would do the job best.....

I totally agree

Very true, especially in smaller workplaces where you are likely to run into a high degree of bias.

However, it's not necessarily always the case and you shouldn't be discouraged completely I've had three interviews that were absolutely disastrous this year - I got offered all three!

I learned that you have to adapt to the situation, do thorough research and look at the various sites online that offer help and guidance. It's a depressing thing to be faced with two or three heads down, all of the hands scribbling away furiously opposite you, but play them at their own game.

It wasn't until this finally clicked for me that I found success.

justcontemplatingsomething · 29/08/2018 22:27

@Whisky2014 how did the 2nd interview go?

OP posts:
Whisky2014 · 30/08/2018 09:43

Mine went well. I came out with a good feeling so fingers crossed. Should hear back today or tomorrow.
I have also just woken up to a job offer from a 2nd interview I had 2 weeks ago. I need to buy time to find out the result from the interview i just did though as I'd prefer that job.

How did your other one go OP and when do you expect to hear about your first one?

SlimGin · 30/08/2018 09:50

Depending on the job and position, some employers can see through the interview nerves and slips and are able to identify who has a passion for the role and who they would realistically like to work with. i hope your other interview went well, keep persevering!

amusedbush · 30/08/2018 10:21

Right there with you! I’ve had five interviews this past year and every time I’m told that I came across really well, they liked me but someone was just a bit better. It’s draining.

I had an interview for a job I REALLY want yesterday and they said they won’t be making a decision until Monday Sad it’s going to be a long few days!

Whisky2014 · 30/08/2018 10:24

Good luck amused. I have had the same thing. And worse, one was a colleague who got an external job we both applied to. I felt shit after that cause i know my work is better!

amusedbush · 30/08/2018 10:34

Whisky2014

Oh no, that's rubbish!

I'm lucky because I have a full time permanent job that I enjoy, I'd just like a promotion and a bigger role to get stuck into. I'd actually rather they told me I was shit because hearing how lovely and likeable and qualified I am, and then the inevitable but... is exhausting. Coming close but not being quite good enough is horrid.

Whisky2014 · 30/08/2018 10:38

Yeh that's right, it's worse to know you almost got it but no tomato.

My contract ended early so I am on the job hunt. But one offer on a company I'm not too sure about and fingers crossed for an offer on one I am really keen on. I dont think I have many Interviews left in me

Loopytiles · 30/08/2018 10:39

Not normally one for enforced “positive thinking”, but this has helped me get better at applications and interviews, still find them stressful but put a positive spin on it, eg every one that goes badly is useful practice, and I’ve just done a good one and got a new job.

Whisky2014 · 30/08/2018 16:35

I now have 2 offers on my lap! 1 I was really wanting and they have blown me away by offering a massive salary increase. Can't believe it!!

amusedbush · 30/08/2018 16:45

Wow, congratulations, Whisky2014! Fantastic news.

Whisky2014 · 30/08/2018 17:16

Thank you! I'm so happy. But trying not to get too excited until I sign the contract! Havent told my partner yet, waiting for him to come home then I'll do the whole didn't get it....OH YES I DID thing. Haha
