To ask why my Perfect Prep machine only makes bottles above 4oz

Hello

I’ve recently invested in a Tommee Tippee perfect prep machine! I combi feed my 12 week old, and usually feed her breast milk at night and formula during the day.

I find the prep machine wonderful it’s so quick and easy, however, one thing I can’t understand is why it does not do feeds lower than 4oz? My LG will only drink between 2.5 - 3oz per feed, which causes quite a bit of waste! Is there a reason for this?

In a few weeks I’m sure she will drink a bit more as she grows, but it’s a bit of a pain at the moment as it seems quite wasteful.

Thanks in advance for your advice xx

I'm not sure - but could you make a 6oz one, decent half into a second bottle and store in the fridge for later? That's what I'd do.

I think I read somewhere - maybe on their fb page - that it was to do with the ratio of hot and cold water and the amount of hot water needed to sterilise the formula.

WooYa · 28/08/2018 17:26

It is as Gillian says - to make sure the ratio is correct. Could you not make it up with a kettle? I did this when DS was drinking under 4oz and it cooled down very quick

@BertieBotts - fab idea, I think what’s put me off doing that is I don’t know how long I could store the feed in the fridge for?

I know from google that formula once made up is good for up to two hours maximum, but not sure what the guidelines are in the fridge.

I’ve come from a family of women who have all exclusively breast fed so not really sure what the formula guidelines are, also formula feeding was not really talked about during antenatal classes :-( therefore I was a bit clueless when I started (still am! Lol)

@WooYa - I probably should do, but the prep machine has made me a bit lazy, and sometimes when LO is especially hungry she will have 4oz, it just does not happen that often. Just wondered really what the reasoning was behind it xx

24 hours in the fridge I think.

Just tagged you on a thread about making bottles in advance.

I used ready mix a fair bit when they were drinking that little.

DinoGreen · 28/08/2018 18:26

Yes, it’s because at least 2oz hot water is needed to sterilise the powder and then 2oz cool to get it to the correct tenperature. I only managed to breastfeed for around 2 weeks so DS was only drinking tiny bottles still when we moved to formula and we used ready mixed for a while as I didn’t like the waste. He was an eating machine though so was soon on 4oz bottles.
