I was a patient in Linton House in High Royds hospital in 1998 for several months. Struggling currently with mental health and can't stop thinking about my time there. Just wondering if anyone else was there or knew anyone there. I was 15 at the time.

Can't believe it and don't know how to deal with this information but I talking to my dad about High Royds today and said how scary it was when we were all taken into the main hospital each week for P.E and he suddenly said I know I've been inside it too. I questioned why and he did a really big sigh and then told me that his grandma was a long term patient (years)and he was taken each Saturday in the 50's before he went to football with his dad and then his mum would get a bus home after. He said they visited her in a room and she would sit and stare into space. Sad

I've spent my whole life asking why, why, why feeling blackness throughout my life and now I feel angry! I really feel knowing this information would have helped my treatment that there was a serious family history. I asked if my mum knew and he said he didn't tell her, even when I was admitted with psychosis as a child!!!!

My kids are in bed and I just want to not be alone with this. Sorry. Sad

Hugs from over here. Don’t really have a lot else helpful to offer. But I hear you, and Flowers

Thank you very much. He doesn't know this info has upset me but it's taken me to a dark place wondering about her and how awful things must have been for her especially in that era. I feel bad for my dc having this as a mother too. I've looked up the hospital online but all I can find is wankers going in filming it in it's derelict state looking for ghosts. We were all people, not freaks! Sad

I live near High Royds, Isn't there a friends of the cemetry online that is run by ex patients?
Just wondered if they might know people?
Or could you start a social media group?
Every time i drive by it i think of the people held there and am so glad we have moved on from this. Cant imagine living in one of the houses. A friend of mines mum was put into their local institution for being pregnant at 15 in 1968. She didn't get out til 1994.

I know somebody who is on the board of the memorial board for high royds hospital. It is pretty notorious. What are you wanting to achieve OP?

dailyshite · 29/08/2018 13:04

Have you looked on FB? There are a few groups on there one is called 'unheard voices of high royds' It might be a good starting point.

FWIW my DH was a nurse in a similar hospital, whilst he knows that there were some aspects of it which were awful, he talks with real love and respect for the people he nursed. They were proper communities and lots of the patients used to go to weddings / christenings etc of the staff. He often wonders what happened to people after it closed, I am sure that some of the staff would remember and wonder about you too.

Sorry you are not good at the moment, hope things improve for you soon.

Mental health treatment has changed so much. Still got such away to go and the stigma is still bad. If you all had heart problems nobody would bat an eyelid. I can’t wait to see a time where mental illness is seen on a par with physical illness.

dailyshite · 29/08/2018 13:22

I totally agree with you Tom

Nikkilcarney · 05/12/2019 22:09

Hi I have just found this post. I was taken in in Oct 97 and released in February 98, were you there then?
It still upsets me to this day x

Fari1988 · 27/12/2019 13:50

Hi yes I was in Linton house I believe around 2002 2003 can't remember exactly. I was going through my eating disorder and I remember I had been admitted there, it's one of the places I have never been able to forget and I don't know why. Everyone I hear or see it's an overwhelming feeling I was there very briefly as my family hated it and pulled me out. I'm older now have children of my own but lately I have been thinking about the place alot.
