4d scan without DP?

Really want a 4d scan. My sister is treating me to one over the weekend as they called and said they don't like to do them after 30 weeks as whilst they can, the quality is poor. I'm at work all next week and am 30 weeks on Monday so can only really do this weekend. Told DP my sister bought it for me as a gift and he is really put out that I'm going for the scan and he isn't. We have had a lot of scans already due to complications and I thought a photo of our little one would be a lovely reminder of what is to come. I was going to frame one for him.

I don't want to upset him... is he being a bit sensitive? Or is a scan something you should only do with your partner?

Debating whether to just cancel or not as don't want him down in the dumps about it, I can't be bothered with a sulky DP!

I wouldn't go for a scan without DH, I'd go to other antenatal appointments (and have), unless it was an emergency and they had to scan me straight away and he was still in his way to the hospital, it's something to share. DH seems to get more from them than I do, I feel every little kick and movement, he doesn't, so that's when he gets to hear the heartbeat and see the baby, is madness it more real for him I think. I know they said after 30 weeks isn't great but surely a few days doesn't matter?

FASH84 · 24/08/2018 22:42

*it makes it more real...

FlibbertyGiblets · 24/08/2018 22:43

I saw a 4D scan photo and it genuinely looked like a dish of lasagne.

Anyhoo, your boyfriend is working and can't attend?

WhatThePug · 24/08/2018 22:49

@FASH84 problem is I work in the week and he works weekends, so I'm staying with my sister (200 miles away) for a few days. We wouldn't realistically have a chance for another couple of weeks.

He had 4d scans with his ex and I've seen them and saw how lovely they were and would love to have them done. My sister is going to pay for it but she is going to come with me (if I even go!) - otherwise we can't afford it. So it's either I go with my sister this weekend or just don't have it done.

Wouldn't be the end of the world and always thought they were silly until now but I have this nagging feeling that I want to see their little face!

Maybe I'm overthinking and should just leave it...

@FlibbertyGiblets GrinGrin that's hilarious! My friend had them done and they look bloody brilliant!

I took my mum. Baby looked like a grumpy Churchill. We had a DVD and photos if DH wanted to see.
TBH it was my second baby and I just wanted time to focus on our imminent arrival. It was lovely.

enbh · 24/08/2018 22:54

I had one done at 33 weeks and it was incredible! Looked just like DD! The quality was great for me!

WhatThePug · 24/08/2018 22:55

@enbh oh really? I was told 30 weeks! I'm going to have to do some googling...

I don't see the point in having one. It's all just a bit weird. Can't you just wait and see the baby for real in a few weeks?

DaisyLand · 24/08/2018 23:00

32-33w here I think was mine done at

WhatThePug · 24/08/2018 23:00

@Hillarious it's a bit of fun really. We have had such a horrid few weeks and not the smoothest pregnancy. Thought it would be a nice thing to do. But you're right I could wait!

If your sister wants to get you it as a gift she could get you a voucher you could use closer to home. I'm sure one of you would be able to take a few hours off sometime in the next few weeks. It seems very unfair to do it without him

BackforGood · 24/08/2018 23:06

Same as Hillarious. Not really getting the love for having it, let alone framing it.
However, if you want to and your sister is paying, and going with dp isn't an option anyway, then just do it. It's not like you are choosing to go on - say - a Monday when he couldn't come, when you have an option of going on Tuesday when he can come, for example. Your choice is to go without him or not go at all, so if that is something your sister is keen to spend her money on, then fill your boots.

Deadheadstickeronacadillac · 24/08/2018 23:07

I think my DH only turned up to 1 of dc1 scams and 2 of dc2. For dc1 first scan dh was at a beer fest...not great seeing as we had already suffered 4 miscarriages by that point!
He was in Miami on business when I had 4d scan, showed him the dvd and photos as a surprise when he returned.
I've had 15 miscarriages in total, dh I think realised that for many of my scans I needed to treat them as a routine thing so he didn't do anything special, however would be and was there in a flash when needed.
This is your only chance to get a 4d scan then go without him and get it done.

WhatThePug · 24/08/2018 23:13

@BackforGood I was thinking of just putting it in a little foldaway frame (like the ones you get when you go on a fairground ride). Wouldn't have it ion display in the house.

@Deadheadstickeronacadillac same! I've had 12 already and due 5 more. DP has been to 3. Not his fault. He just can't get the time off. I'm torn...
