To start a rampage in a small seaside resort

Visiting a small seaside resort on the east coast, we'll call it Miley.
Ventured into a large charity shop chain let's call it YMBA.
Under the counter is a large collection of various sizes knitting needles all nicely bundled into sizes.
Requested to purchase a set of said needles and was refused as, and I quote "we can't sell them because they are needles" WTAF????.
Seriously I would say I present as middle aged sensible adult, though I was wearing a hoodie but still don't think I looked like a potential terrorist/hooligan/psychopath.
AIBU to think it's perfectly legal to sell me knitting needles and just hope I'm not going on a murderous streak with a set of 6mm coated knitting needles ?

the thing is, people that work in charity shops are usually unpaid, untrained etc., so potentially they can talk utter nonsense.

If you want some knitting needles go to a haberdashers with normal, trained folk behind the till.
