I rang someone today, they didn’t pick up, went to voicemail. I left a message to say I’d try them later.

Within seconds during my next call I received a “this person tried to call you” text from the first person. Ah, they were there... so I rang back. Voicemail again. Received a “this person tried to call you text”. Hmmm. Waited, nothing. Rang again, I’d rather speak to them now than later, voicemail. Another text. Got on with my other calls... two more texts. Tried to ring them back, voicemail. Got another text.

Just get off the damn phone, I said I’d call you back!

The person who instigated the call is the one that calls back.

Exactly!

I would text them to tell them I was going to call them so they could stop trying to call me back.

Yes might do that!

Hmm if I miss a call I call the person back, I keep trying to tell my mum that people don't really use voicemail anymore, it ties up the line when someone is inevitably trying to call you back. Call, if they don't answer either try again later if they haven't returned your call by then or text. Business is slightly different.

Phone etiquette dictates the person who made the first call and was unanswered, left voicemail ( unless voicemail instructs them to callback of course), gets cut off, hangs up for whatever reason... is the one who calls back.

I misdialled recently and got 4 texts from a person returning my call. I got no answer recently from a business, left no message as I needed someone there and then, rang the next one on my list and gave them the job, and was plagued by calls from the first. Eventually rang them back to say not needed and... voicemail. No! You snooze you lose!
