To ask if the Shettles method actually works?

If you don't know the Shettles method says if you would like to conceive a baby girl, you have to have sex 2-4 days before ovulation and if you want a baby boy to try no earlier than 24 hours before you ovulate. I never had an issue with gender but I just found this interesting, did you try it/ did it work? it claims a "75% success rate" but I'm a little skeptical. Hmm

it worked for me with my first.

I didn’t actually try it but based on when I conceived, I knew that DC2 was most likely a girl - and she was.

It’s fairly straightforward: X sperm (for a girl) tend to swim slower and live longer than Y sperm. So if you have sex however long before ovulation, it’s more likely to be the X sperm that are still surviving. If you have sex just before ovulation, it’s more likely to be a Y sperm that reaches the egg first (the patriarchal view of the passive egg and the racing sperm is pretty inaccurate anyway but the basic Shettles theory still holds true).

I find it frustrating when people are adamant it worked for them. There are two genders, so for arguments sake, it's a 50/50 chance either way. Therefore, how can anyone say with any certainty that It works?! How would you know for sure that you'd have ended up with the other gender if you hadn't done It? Besides, you'd have to be super fertile for it to work even if there is truth in it. Conception isn't particularly reliable at the best of times!

Worked for me - we had a girl first and then A boy.

Oysterbabe · 18/06/2019 21:35

It's been debunked. It was based on observations that turned out to be incorrect.

Xmr1986 · 18/06/2019 21:41

Had sex 5 days before ovulation (was being monitored for ohss so we know the exact date) = Boy.
