To say no to this season ticket request?!

I like ice hockey. I hadn't been for years since I moved cities and last year finally convinced DP to come with me. He enjoyed it (didn't get quite as much into it as me, but had fun regardless).

It's "our thing". We will usually grab dinner before hand etc.

Went to ever home game last year and a couple of away games. We agreed to get season tickets this year.

All very good. So far.

DPs friend has just messaged asking if we will buy him a season ticket and he will pay us back so he can sit next to us. He's never been to an ice hockey game before, so isn't a fan.

I don't like him very much. He's nice enough to me but he has a drink problem, very immature and show offy, makes crude anti women jokes, laughs at fat people etc.

So AIBU to politely decline as it's our my thing and we don't need a third wheel?!

DP thinks I am being cruel as he doesn't have a girlfriend surprise and gets lonely on Saturday nights, he just wants a new hobby etc etc

I was half tempted to say YOU TWO JUST GET BLOODY SEASON TICKETS THEN but then I remembered ITS MY THING. I AM THE ICE HOCKEY FAN. I DONT WANT TO SPEND MY SATURDAY NIGHTS WITH JACK THE LAD CHUGGING TENNANTS AND SHOUTING OBSENTIES ALL NIGHT like he does at the football

Why would you buy his season ticket???

Hamandcheesebaguette · 16/08/2018 21:23

Why don't you just tell him your money's all tied up and you can't front him the money? He should get the message.

NewPapaGuinea · 16/08/2018 21:28

OP means buy on his behalf. OP isn’t expected to put the money up for it too. Your DP should know it’s your thing, unless it was him who planted the idea and now feels obligated.

As a minority sports fan YABU. Sports such as Ice Hockey need every possible person in attendance in order for clubs to keep going.

Bestseller · 16/08/2018 21:29

This would be a hard request to decline if he wanted to be buy his own ticket next to you but yes absolutely say no to buying the ticket for him.

madja · 16/08/2018 21:33

How does the friend know about you buying the tickets? Has DP mentioned it to him?
You're in a really tricky situation here. I might be tempted not to buy the season tickets if you are going to end up saddled with this guy every Saturday.

Leeds2 · 16/08/2018 21:36

Is there an online stadium seating plan? So that you could see if there weren't any available seats next to yours ..........

As a fan of the sport I can think of nothing worse, don't let yourself be guilted into this because it is not a popular sport, the hockey scene is vastly improving in this country. It would be different if it was him attending a few games during the seasons but if he comes every week it will be you who is viewed as the spare wheel whilst he and your DH hang out as mates every weekend.

In the immortal words of Mumsnet no is a complete sentence and in this situation you don't need to explain yourself to him just say no and leave it at that. I would however also have words with you DH as its completely unreasonable to be inviting him to spend every weekend with you without even asking.

smeerf · 16/08/2018 21:49

"Hi xx, just to let you know, hockey night is our date night. We'd love you to come to the odd match but joining us every week doesnt work for us. Thanks for understanding."

If he moans to DP or mutual friends, he's basically complaining that you won't allow him to third wheel your date nights all season - he'll look crazy.

Hamandcheesebaguette · 16/08/2018 22:01

The idea of him coming to a couple of games doesn't sound so bad...

I could spin it that he might not even enjoy it as he's such a big football fan so maybe hold off on the season ticket idea Grin

To be fair where I am they games sell out almost every home game. But then the arena is tiny compared to my real home team PANTHERS
