Beasties in my jam

Picked a load of rosehips and made jam with them today. When I was straining them I found a boiled earwig and two maggots. I've jarred it up (without tasting) would I be unreasonable to not tell my husband and let him eat it?

Presumably you’ve removed the offending beasties in which case I say crack on - you’ll have boiled out any germs!

(I am very relaxed about things like this though - I expect others will be horrified!)

Sugar, heat and cooking, = no germs. Just pick them out and say nowt

The beastie lodgers are now in the bin. Although if I had kept them in I guess I could have sold it as one of those novelty bug I'm a celebrity get me out here food challenges 🤔

Nah it's fine!

For future reference though, I soak fruit in the fridge for 48hrs in water with a bit of sugar - it sweetened the fruit but also all the beasties come out and will be floating on the top of the water Smile

Thanks for the tip, I will do that next time

I submerge fruit and veg that have come straight from the garden in salted water fir 30 ish min with an ostinato swish of the water and pulling out anything that's risen to the top. It brings up any creatures straight away. A quick rince after washes away the salt.

Thanks. I will give them a good soaking next time so I can eat the jam too 😂
