To be worried about buying a mirrored wardrobe? Recommendations needed.

We've just moved house and want a double, sliding mirrored-door wardrobe for our bedroom. I've only ever bought cheap self-assembly wardrobes from Argos and Ikea in the past and they have always been a bit ropy. This time I'm prepared to spend a little more to get something with smoothly sliding doors that doesn't feel like it's about to fall apart at any moment.

I was all ready to buy a John Lewis one, before I realised it was too tall - it's for a converted loft room so max height is 205cm.

I've found one here at Bensons that is the right dimensions, but it's worryingly cheap compared to the John Lewis one and it'll take 6-8 weeks to deliver (!). I've no idea whether it will be worth the wait.

Any recommendations?

OP, to be honest, it looks a bit basic and the price is so low that I would be worried about quality. It's only 1.5 meters wide and has very basic shelving inside that would not be very convenient for storing clothes.

Why do you not want to consider IKEA? I would not call their Pax system cheap and definitely would not put on the same level with Argos. I don't think they do mirrored sliding doors in Pax, but there are regular mirrored doors and you can customise the insides of the wardrobe to have the exact storage you want. I've had a massive Pax wardrobe for nearly ten years and it's none the worse for the wear. Will probably serve quite happily for another 10 years at least.

We have built in mirrored wardrobes in one room and one of the mirrors got broken thanks to a rowdy party when we were away (bloody kids!)' it was a good few years ago and it was very expensive to replace even though it was a stand size so I would say that's really cheap for that wardrobe. As PP said check IKEA, my friend had amazing wardrobes from there with fantastic storage, not mirrored though.

I've got to recommend PAX... my sliding door PAX feels v quality. I have had a lot of PAX through the years (in dif places) and always v good if you put it together well.

We have PAX from IKEA too and it's great. We have mirrored doors, although not sliding and as PP said, you can customise it to exactly what you want from lots of options.

Wow, lots of recommendations for PAX. Will take a look, but ideally wanted sliding doors.

I have a pax system and it’s the best wardrobe I’ve owned. Its eight years old, looks as good as the day it was installed. It’s also very solid, I have a lot of clothes. I don’t consider it a cheap option either. Pax do a sliding door system. Get yourself over to ikea and have a look at the different options available, there’s plenty of storage choices.

We have a PAX with sliding mirrored doors, I love them. They definitely don't feel cheap and feel very sturdy and robust. You can customise the insides however you want.

Did a whole room in pax and I love it more and more every day

Get yourself to an ikea, at the wardrobe department they have helpers sat at computers, you explain to them what you want and what you need it to do and they will design your wardrobe system on the computer and give you a list of the bits you need. It's a really good service!

Basically, for me PAX is the best alternative to custom-built in-built wardrobes. Bespoke in-built wardrobes usually cost a ton, especially if you want fancy storage. PAX will be at least half the price and you can probably have "fancier" storage for your money too.

hilbobaggins · 16/08/2018 13:54

Adding to the PAX love. Those wardrobes have changed my life. You can definitely get sliding mirrored doors.

Minibea · 16/08/2018 13:57

Another vote for the PAX - we have sliding doors - one mirrored one not. They look great and don’t feel cheap at all!

cookiesaurus · 16/08/2018 14:00

Another vote for PAX! They're great!

I had a double sliding mirror door Pax and they were put up, taken down, put up, taken down and put back up again! Lasted amazingly through house moves :) we then gave them away and I think are still going strong!
