First of all I want to point out that in no way am I looking to offend anyone and also that this is not a belief of mine, I obviously don't know but wondered if there was anything in the possibility of it?

Cause what type of illness? I don’t understand what you are talking about

Chuggachuggatoottoot · 14/08/2018 21:20

I've been reading Anita Moorjani's book 'dying to be me' where she talks about how she was never true to herself prior to her illness and near death experience

Well obviously a bad diet and smoking etc. can cause ill health.

If you mean voodoo/spells/wishful thinking, then no.

KellyBailey · 14/08/2018 21:21

Well, yeah people can cause illness in all kinds of ways. Smoking, being overweight, taking drugs etc etc. Not really sure what exactly you're asking?

Chuggachuggatoottoot · 14/08/2018 21:22

I guess it's that question of whether our mental health can effect our physical health

OP posts:
Pinkbendyman · 14/08/2018 21:22

Yes, people can cause illness; it’s called cross-infection.

PurpleDaisies · 14/08/2018 21:23

Cause illness how? Obviously bad diet and smoking etc etc etc can lead to illness. I’d have thought that was clear. Confused

Chuggachuggatoottoot · 14/08/2018 21:23

In particular Anita in her book talks about cancer

EggysMom · 14/08/2018 21:24

Poor mental health can lead you to take less care of your body, making you more susceptible to viruses etc that you might otherwise have shrugged off.

PurpleDaisies · 14/08/2018 21:24

I guess it's that question of whether our mental health can affect our physical health

Poor mental health can lead to smoking, alcohol abuse, drug use, poor diet, lack of exercise etc which all cause ill health.

9amTrain · 14/08/2018 21:25

I don't really understand what you mean, but yes you can make yourself ill in various ways if that's what you're talking about?

Frogscotch7 · 14/08/2018 21:27

I haven’t read the book but I know that high levels of stress can cause my physical defences to lower Nd I’m much more likely to come down with an infection. I’ve also broken out in a rash when very anxious.

3luckystars · 14/08/2018 21:27

So if I’m understanding your post, then you are wondering if others can affect your health? I don’t know but I definitely believe that stress can make you ill.
It can cause physical symptoms.

So if one person is really stressing you out then maybe that could make you ill, Is that what you mean?

Chuggachuggatoottoot · 14/08/2018 21:29

Yes making yourself Ill. In her book she talks about how she was never true to herself and was always a people pleaser. She had anxieties about getting cancer and eventually got cancer. She almost died and had a NDE where she had the choice whether she died or came back, she came back and her cancer tumours shrunk and she completely recovered after this experience as she knew that she needed to love herself which she had never really done before.

O fiddlesticks. This is snakeoil at its worst.

Chuggachuggatoottoot · 14/08/2018 21:32

longwayoff eh?

OP posts:
glintandglide · 14/08/2018 21:34

I think I know what you mean. I believe in looking at well-being holistically and believe emotional issues can affect your physical health (ie Adrenal fatigue)

I think it’s inportant to say that this isn’t about blaming people for their illness, just about what it might be connected to

peachgreen · 14/08/2018 21:34

You can't give yourself cancer by not loving yourself. Nor can you cure yourself by doing so. Absolute tosh and very insulting to people who have terminal cancer.

Chuggachuggatoottoot · 14/08/2018 21:37

I think it’s important to say that this isn’t about blaming people for their illness, just about what it might be connected to

Yes I agree

OP posts:
Yokatsu · 14/08/2018 21:39

Yes to stress making you more susceptible to illness and injury, yes to lack of stress being the best state for recovery.

No to curing cancer Hmm

Vitalogy · 14/08/2018 21:43

I understand what you mean OP. You'll get little understanding on this forum though.

YouTheCat · 14/08/2018 21:44

My exh made me depressed.

glintandglide · 14/08/2018 21:45

Yes I don’t believe positive thinking can cure cancer

ShadowCatt · 14/08/2018 21:51

No. Mental health and stress can affect physical health. It can cause people to pick up habits that are dangerous or increase the risk of cancer. But no, it doesn't cause cancer. It doesn't cure it either.

Silvercatowner · 14/08/2018 21:57

Hasn't it been proven that high levels of cortisol can decrease the immune system? (I may have been dreaming that, but it sounds plausible....)
