Where you would live that's commutable distance from London?

Where would you live or build a house that is still within an easy commute to central London? No more than 40 minutes - 1hour ish.

Young professional couple, after a bit of a change from small town living. No kids but want a detached with a garden.

PalePinkSwan · 14/08/2018 16:45

Letchworth it's beautiful

How long is a piece of string? What sort of area - market town, rural, urban? Budget? I live in Surrey commuter belt (Elmbridge borough) in a detached with a garden. There's plenty of those all around London though so you'll need to be more specific about wants.

noego · 14/08/2018 16:51

I'm 20 miles from the city. House prices 2 up 2 down small garden £350k +
Fares into city £3000 per annum. Car parking at station £850 per annum. Can be in the city within an hour.

Harpenden, St Albans, Hitchin, Letchworth - lot of lovely places in Hertfordshire, though trains aren't amazing at the moment

PalePinkSwan · 14/08/2018 17:31

Honestly nobody can give you useful advice until you know what area/station you want to commute to and what your budget is.

LunaLovegoodsRadishes · 14/08/2018 17:37

Rochester? Leigh on Sea? Eynesford is lovely, if a bit pricey. Brighton, Lewes, (train services are dodgy though) Beaconsfield, High Wycombe, Tonbridge...

eurochick · 14/08/2018 18:11

Is that time frame for the train journey or door to door? That can make a big difference.

Want2bSupermum · 14/08/2018 18:12

Bracknell. I think it's underrated.

Kintan · 14/08/2018 18:13

What’s your budget? A detached with a garden commutable to London is going to be £££

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 14/08/2018 18:18

I live in zone 3 and my commute to work in zone 1 takes 40mins to 1 hour... I think it's going to be tough to get properly outside London in that time?

RubyWho · 14/08/2018 18:22

I’m in the Surrey/ Hants borders (further out than Guildford but not as far as Alton). Train takes me 55 mins (Waterloo) tube or walk to Tottenham ct rd , so an hour and 10 mins door to door.

flyingsaucersherbet · 14/08/2018 18:26

I used to live in Stevenage. Second St Albans, hitchin areas too (they are nicer!)

RubyWho · 14/08/2018 18:29

On the other side of the commuter belt - I have friends in Tring who sing its praises?

CoughLaughFart · 14/08/2018 19:19

Without budget details it’s impossible to advise.
