Take a day off and do nothing

mononoaware1907 · 13/08/2018 16:15

Recently I've not been feeling like myself, been stressed, worried about non sense etc, so today I've asked my boss if I can take a day of annual leave tomorrow and she's been fine with it (relatively quiet period)

However I am worried and feel guilty because other people seemed to laugh at me for taking a day off for tomorrow (workaholics place!!!!)

AIBU to not feel guilty and do whatever the hell I want tomorrow? Also, any ideas of pleasant activities by myself? No shopping! Grin

Do it and don't worry! If you need a break you need a break, people aren't all the same are they?

I will pre-cursor my suggestions with the fact I have a toddler so time alone is very precious:

I would have a lie in (that means 7.30-8am), leisurely breakfast, do something around the house I have been meaning to but never have the time, go for a walk and stop for a coffee/cake/ice cream, read books, binge watch something on netflix, have a long shower/bath and then give myself a mani-pedi, fake tan etc so I feel all refreshed. Heaven

DanielCraigsUnderpants · 13/08/2018 16:34

I do this a lot. I have pretty shocking mental ill health at times, its days like this that save my sanity and keep me in employment. And stop me from taking sick leave

take the time, do what you like when you like

I usually have a lay in or go back to bed once I have taken my little boy to nursery, walk the dogs, watch tv, read. But whatever i do or don't do, i reason that its a good use of a day because I did what made me happy at the time

mimibunz · 13/08/2018 16:37

I did this today. Slept late, took myself out to lunch, tidied the house a bit. It’s an absolute must for me as my job is highly stressful and full on when I’m there.

GemGem97 · 13/08/2018 16:39

Omg do it lol, I booked a day off and everyone kept asking “so are you doing anything nice?” – NOPE! Just watching TV and chilling  I also work in a ‘workaholic’ place, people check their emails on their annual leave (when theyre on family holidays too!!) and I always get comments from my manager and team members that I don’t actually get to my desk before 8:55… well of course I don’t, I start at 9am lol??? And theyre still surprised I actually take my whole lunch hour. Madness lol

You come first, remember that!

MistressoftheYoniverse · 13/08/2018 16:52

Definitely do it!! I do ...I call it my 'Mental Health Day' Grin

Fluffyears · 13/08/2018 17:00

I took a day off today. Wanted a lie in but the builders across the road had other ideas. Got up about 10, after reading in bed, made breakfast, had a nice bath then cleared out two drawers in the kitchen and had a general tidy and clean of kitchen and living room. Oh and booked a few nights away for next month. Do it!

Iloveacurry · 13/08/2018 17:01

Sounds lovely 😊

shinyredbus · 13/08/2018 17:02

I’m on leave today and I’ve worked at least half a day. It’s bloody awful when you work In a place where everyone is working all the time. 😭

Thank you for all your lovely replies!
I wouldn't say I work in a toxic environment but I have quite a few colleagues who are famous for gossip and trying to make you feel bad!

Now that I read all your lovely comments I am

  1. Call it my mental health day
  2. Enjoy it and not think for a second about those motherfuckersGrin

I have a "Health" week booked off for when the kids go back to school - my youngest starts reception that week so I will have most of it to myself. Could have just done half days (am juggling child care anyways for that week) and used the other 2 days in school holidays but thought sod it - means I can have a week of catching up on some bits, do a spring clean and sort out, relax and have some me time. I am knackered from working full time, commuting and single parenting two kids. It's already got me sick once this year from trying to do too much and my immune system just crashed so a week off from the rat race will do me good!

beeefcake · 13/08/2018 19:16

I do this all the time.

I get exhausted and strung out so bloody easily so need a day in bed once in a while!!!

Quickerthanavicar · 13/08/2018 19:28

I book a day off work, tell family I am working, and go to the cinema by myself.

LemonysSnicket · 13/08/2018 19:29

Take your annual leave! I have 13 days left and all my holidays/ events booked off. I'm thinking of taking a week to lounge around.

GertrudeCB · 13/08/2018 19:34

Don't feel bad ! DH has a business for 1 week the same time every year and I always book a day off work midweek. Sleep in, long bath, read for a couple of hours, leisurely lunch out with a friend then home to binge watch a pre selected boxset. Pure bliss Smile

bridgetreilly · 13/08/2018 19:40

It is absolutely nobody else's business what you do with your annual leave. You do what you need to.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 13/08/2018 20:16

I've been known to take a day off and book the dog walker so I don't even have to leave the house!

Personally though OP ill be tempted to make up some story for your co-workers. Tell them you're taking a lover. Just for the day. That'll put their workaholic gas at a peep.

mononoaware1907 · 14/08/2018 07:39

Thanks you lovely people!❤️

@LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett I was actually quite tempted to tell them I need a WHOLE DAY off to shave my legsGrinGrin

Nikephorus · 14/08/2018 07:58

It's just a day's holiday. Tell them you're having a lazy day, pottering, meeting friends, climbing the Matterhorn or whatever. People do different things on holidays.

Ragwort · 14/08/2018 08:04

Absolutely you should do this, in fact I plan my week so that I take my days off when DH & DS are at work/school so that I can totally relax alone (I work in retail so it's fairly easy to do this). I don't think I could easily cope with life if I was surrounded by people all the time. I often take myself out for days/visits alone, so much more peaceful than having to cope with other peoples' demands. I have just persuaded DH & DS to take a skiing holiday without me in Christmas 2019 and I am already ridiculously excited at the thought of 10 days home alone Grin

Mansplanation · 14/08/2018 08:08

I call these ‘invisible days’ and they are absolutely vital.

I approach it by saying if I was completely invisible for a whole day, what would I do? As far as the rest of the world is concerned I don’t exist, I’m completely and utterly free. What now?

Then I go from there Smile

It usually ends up with a super long dog walk in the country somewhere and a huge pub lunch on my own, then a lovely long bath and an afternoon in my PJ’s playing minecraft, Skyrim or binge watching something on Netflix Grin

In the evening I have hot soup and a sandwich to dunk in my soup and curl up on the sofa with DH and a book, or we watch something together.

Honestly without these days once every couple of months I’d lose my mind.

Ohyippedydooda · 14/08/2018 09:08

I have a couple coming up and I can't wait! Love that others do the same. Health/invisible is a great name, sums it up exactly, it re-energises me for my busy life and allows me to be a better employee/mum etc. Personally I think you'd be crazy not to book them in regularly Wink

@Mansplanation love your username!

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 14/08/2018 09:10

OP Grin or tell them you're clipping your toenails. It's been a while and might take a bit of time....

mononoaware1907 · 14/08/2018 11:22

Just been out for lunch with an ex coworker and now I'm back home, ready to go to bed for an afternoon nap! Oh the joys. GrinGrinGrin
