AIBU to think we should get more than just the difference?

We are on holiday -arrived yesterday.

Checked onto our Chalet and both bedrooms smelt musty when we went in.
No problem I thought I'll just open the windows and give it an air and whack the heating on (I know! It was raining!)

Did that and after we had been out for the evening came back and they still smelt musty. I thought the bedding was damp to touch but hubby didn't think so.

Opened windows again.

When I went to bed the bedding felt damp and I could still smell the damp. Ended up sleeping between two of my own throws I'd bought from home.

In the morning I was still convinced everything was damp so pulled sheets from mattress and the was mould spots.

Hubby called company who came out and offered to change mattress tomorrow. We said we're not sleeping on it.
Offered to bring a dehumidifier to try and rid of smell but it had been freshly painted and they don't get damp. He said once you get a smell in your head though...and trailed off.

After he had gone to and source a mattress I moved the beds and both rooms had mould on the skirting boards and walls.
On further inspection with my torch on phone the (faux suede) beds had mould on them.

He offered us 2 alternatives (after first saying they were fully booked)

One was a pet friendly chalet or a caravan.
We talked about it and rather than drive 4 hours home we took it. We have to move everything including our weekly shop that supermarket had delivered to the caravan.

We have been offered th e difference between our (deluxe!) Chalet and this caravan.

When we moved into the the caravan this is also a pet frendly caravan so does have a whiff of dog.

AIBU to think we should get more than just the difference? We booked a pet free deluxe villa and have a pet friendly caravan. We had to sleep a night until the mouldy damp chalet and wasn't believed and also had to take time out of our holiday to move again.

I feel really annoyed about it and feel like we payed for a better quality holiday than this!

Yes the difference plus an amount to compensate for the crap night and inconvenience of having to move and time spent dealing with it.

araiwa · 12/08/2018 16:24

Why on earth would you take a caravan that smells of dog??

VincentVanGoughandhisear · 12/08/2018 16:27

It didn't smell like dog when we viewed it. It's a faint whiff not as bad as the mould infested dump that we spent a night in :s

We have children and this is our only holiday this year so feel that this is our only choice??

Moominfan · 12/08/2018 16:31

Yea it's a pretty shitty start to your holiday. I'd be expecting some kind of goodwill gesture

VincentVanGoughandhisear · 12/08/2018 16:38

Maybe I should show the manager this thread :)

He also offered some air freshener before the mould was found! I was like Hmm

SavannahSky · 12/08/2018 16:42

I think you are just being grabby now

It's a caravan in the UK. The manager sounds like he's taken it seriously and done his best here

MissContrary · 12/08/2018 16:45

Yanbu.

greathat · 12/08/2018 16:50

Not grabby! Seriously they should be falling over backwards for you! Is there a head office you can get onto?

BewareOfDragons · 12/08/2018 16:51

I think you should be offered more as well. Sounds filthy and unkempt ... who allows mould to get that bad and thinks it's ok to let out to unsuspecting holidaymakers?!?! ... and no doubt they're charging through the nose during the summer holidays for the privilege of it.

Disgusting. I'd name and shame after your week if they don't do better.

yorkshireyummymummy · 12/08/2018 17:04

I would be considering what my first tweet to the company’s head office was going to be.
I do hope you took some pictures.
It sounds awful. A damp deluxe??? Imagine if you had gone for the basic level.

I would be wanting
A) the difference between the deluxe chalet and the pet friendly caravan refunding.
B) the first two days of the holiday refunding since you had to endure a night in crap chalet then the aggravation of complaining, moving accommodation
C) an acceptable goodwill gesture (ie min 25% cost refunded)

IF I didn’t get what I wanted then I would go on social media, email the M.D. and even consider phoning the Daily Mail totell them of my super sad face caused by mydeluxe disappointment.
If something isn’t right you should complain - you have paid good money for this holiday that you have had to work hard for. Why should you accept something that does not fit the description which you bought? If you went to MacDonalds for a Big Mac and there were no meat patty’s in your Big Mac you would complain. Why should it be any different just because there’s more money involved?

TellMeItsNotTrue · 12/08/2018 17:32

I think difference plus 2 days refunding is reasonable considering those days have been spent in a mouldy place and with time and stress spent on trying to sort things and moving everything

Also, assuming you booked in advance the second place would have been cheaper then so if they are refunding difference between price you paid initially compared to price of cheaper place now, then you are still losing out. Example -

When you booked
First one was £300
Second one was £150

Now the price of the second one is £250

If they refund you the price difference between when you booked first one, and what the second place is currently then you would get £50 back, but actually if you had booked it when you first did then you would have been £150 better off so this is what should be refunded (hopefully this makes sense)

We are having this issue at the moment. Holiday accommodation with mould, wall paper peeling off etc and one of our children got hurt though lack of proper maintaince. We have been offered less than a days cost of our holiday when due to the accident we had to actually stay inside all one day and said child then also had an allergic reaction to a product they used in our accommodation to try and combat the mould (it didn’t work). They also apparently couldn’t move us due to being fully booked.

VincentVanGoughandhisear · 12/08/2018 17:42

Thank you everyone :)

Tellmeitsnottrue thank you!
I will update when we come to a satifactory solution.

To whoever up the thread said I'm being grabby this is for you Hmm

They have probaly booked it out for next week too!

I am definitely going to review on tripadvisor!!

shutlingsloe · 12/08/2018 18:22

I had a similar issue ten years ago, contacted the CAB, they helped me write a letter, they suggested asking for a third back under our specific circumstances as being reasonable.

We got it back.

It's REALLY not being grabby.

VincentVanGoughandhisear · 12/08/2018 20:17

Thank you :)

On the verge of packing up and coming home to be honest because of the Caravan situation is not great. Doggy smelling caravan is not my idea of fun!

OP posts:
ScattyCharly · 12/08/2018 20:21

I’d go home. Sounds totally grim.

VincentVanGoughandhisear · 13/08/2018 13:45

We have checked out. The smell of dog and dog hairs became too much Confused

The (full) refund is supposed to be issued tomorrow ...we will see what happens tomorrow.

SendYouUpInFlames · 13/08/2018 14:14

Can I ask, is this Butlins or Pontins, by any chance?

They're prone to filth like this.

Mammabear31 · 13/08/2018 16:11

Yes please name and shame OP to warn others! We're going to a Haven park in a couple of weeks and I'm worried now Confused

Don't blame you for packing up and going home. Hope you can find somewhere else to go that's clean and relaxing Flowers

VincentVanGoughandhisear · 13/08/2018 17:39

No its a family run business but they own quite a few holiday parks.

Will name them after we've had our refund!

OP posts:
VincentVanGoughandhisear · 15/08/2018 21:58

Refund is being processed...

Tried to keep money the nights we had stayed!

Will update when money is actually in the bank!
