As a graduate I had a great job as a solicitor in a really interesting area of law. It was a contract role only though but no problem, I then went for and got offered a role in another city which would've put me in a very good position to becoming a barrister in the next few years. However at the time I was in a LDR and was holding out for my boyfriend asking me to move to be with him, so I stupidly ended up backing out of the new job at the last minute after already resigning from my other job.
In hindsight I probably should've gone straight back to the contract role and asked if I could stay on (they'd already offered me a 6 month extension) but I was too embarrassed, and also not thinking too clearly because my relationship had just ended. I was left scrambling to find a new job and ended up accepting the first one I got offered, which was in a startup in the legal industry but not specifically a solicitor role.
Fast forward several years later and I've never really gotten my career direction back. I've worked in a few different jobs with no clear focus and now work in a perfectly fine CS job but my career seems to have stalled completely. I don't know if I can go back to law as it's been years since I worked as a solicitor and that was as a graduate, so I'm guessing I'd have to apply for graduate roles again and start from scratch, and that's if they'd even take me given how competitive legal roles are to get. I don't even know if I want to necessarily work as a solicitor or if I just liked that it provided a clear career path, as opposed to just working in random roles as I have the past few years.
Has anyone else's career gone off track like mine? Anyone resurrected it? Advice would be much-appreciated.
