Tell me im not going mad. A friend of mine has just corrected me. Apparently I’ve been saying pedestal wrong my whole life. I pronounce is pede-stal she pronounces it pede-stool. Apparently you need to put the ‘stool’ at the end. She’s just laughed hysterically at me for pronouncing it wrong! I’ve literally never heard anyone say it this way but her. She’s convinced she’s right as apparently her English teacher at her very posh private school used to pronounce it this way. Aibu to laugh in her face and tell her she’s wrong Grin

She couldn't be more wrong if she tried!

HelpmeobiMN · 07/08/2018 12:17

I've never heard pedestool! Is it a regional dialect thing?

ArmySal · 07/08/2018 12:19

You're correct. My friend also thinks it is pedda-stool, and must visualise it as such, she actually says "he's got her up on a pedda-stool" GrinGrin

IHeartMarmiteToast · 07/08/2018 12:19

No sorry she's wrong - pedestal not pedestool.

Definitely pedestal.
I have a friend who frequently thinks she's being used as "the escape goat." I've given up trying to explain that it's not that and no she isn't.

RubiksQueen · 07/08/2018 17:12

She's an idiot and her parents wasted their money on her education.

HTH Grin

Anniegetyourgun · 07/08/2018 17:14

Before sneering at you, had she tried (radical suggestion alert) consulting a dictionary?

AuntieStella · 07/08/2018 17:16

More pede-stul for me - the second syllable not really being stressed and the vowel becoming a schwa.

iklboo · 07/08/2018 17:26
Grin
Upsy1981 · 07/08/2018 17:26

You are right. She is wrong.

delphguelph · 07/08/2018 17:27

Utter rubbish.

PositiveVibez · 07/08/2018 17:28

She is 100% incorrect.

RaspberryRipple1963 · 07/08/2018 17:41

You are right OP. Mind you,I've heard worse than her mispronunciation. Someone I worked with years ago used to say 'pedal stool'! Grin

SilverySurfer · 07/08/2018 18:45

Daft woman - you are 100% correct.

reallybadidea · 07/08/2018 18:55

I imagine her posh English teacher drawled the 'al' sound to become 'awl' not 'ool'. What a wally your friend is!

CherryBlossom321 · 07/08/2018 19:00

Yep, pedestal. I did once enjoy several minutes of guffawing at someone on certain other 'mum' forum, who was playing keyboard warrior and told another poster in no uncertain terms that she should get down from her 'pedal-stool' and be careful not to hit her head on the way down 🤣

ShadowHuntress · 07/08/2018 20:30

Glad it’s not me then! She also does a lot of posts and check ins on face time. Without fail, every time, she always put on-root to so and so place instead of en route. I can’t belie no ones pulled her up on it yet 😂

That’s Facebook not face time! Sorry on my phone and I have fat fingers!
