Can I take Claritin (Loratadine) and codeine together?

I've googled and can't seem to find an answer.

I'm hacking my guts up for the forth night running and just want some rest. I took some Claritin over an hour ago but it hasn't touched this bastard cough, I was wondering if I could take codeine as well?

As long as you are fine taking them individually there's no interaction

Thank you!

It may make your drowsy, but how much of a maybe that is will be down to you. FWIW I'm on daily max dose Codeine Phosphate with dihydrocodeine for breakthrough pain and still take loratadine or cetirizine without undue effects. Iirc loratadine can cause kidney issues though so be cautious.

I have no idea why they’d be contraindicated - just take it.

I take cetirizine daily and often take with codeine.

Yes. Loratadine is a long acting antihistamine which wouldn’t have any impact on most coughs. Who suggested that ad a reasonable way to manage anything but mild hay fever? Codeine will suppress a cough but won’t address the cause of a cough. Assuming it’s a viral respiratory tract infection then codeine might let you sleep.

Have you got any linctus or honey and lemon?

You can take them together but if it's a cough then linctus or syrup is best.

Vicks is great for coughs. I’m asthmatic and use it a lot.

I suffer with allergies too and sometime Claritin gives me relief from quickly coughs. Whether it's a placebo type thing I don't know.

I can cope with drowsy, I long for drowsy. Here's to sleeping like a log!

Thank you all. Have taken codeine phosphate and rubbed vicks on my feet!

If the cough is due to allergies then it's not surprising loratadine would help alleviate it
