Are P&O being sexist?

I am aware that this is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but it has slightly annoyed me and my husband can’t see anything wrong with it!

I made a P&O ferry booking several months ago, in my name, with my money, and with me listed as first passenger. All emails regarding the booking have started ‘dear Mrs Chunky’. We get to the ferry and on both journeys the single ticket reads ‘3 passengers, lead passenger Mr Bob Chunky’. I can think of no reason for this other than him being a male. AIBU?

Only thing I can think of is if you filled in his passenger details first if you see what I mean so he’s in the passenger 1 slot (I usually do this when I’m booking with other people just to make sure I don’t forget them!)

pennycarbonara · 04/08/2018 19:14

Is his first name earlier in the alphabet than yours?

BlueBug45 · 04/08/2018 19:15

No you are not. I've booked and paid for hotels and flights for my OH and myself to go away, and I am always the lead passenger/guest. I suggest you contact P&O's customer service and ask for an explanation on why they did that as you are the person who booked and paid for everything.

Chunkymonkey123 · 04/08/2018 19:17

I’ve double checked and I’m passenger 1 and my name is earlier in the alphabet. They’ve just sent me a survey to complete which is why I was reminded of it and I might ask them.

😂 definitely did not read that properly! Sorry! In that case that’s very odd and I’d definitely raise it with them - curious to hear what their rationale is 🤔

This happens quite a lot with different companies.

I filled out all the paperwork to open the joint bank account and the mortgage putting my name first but every letter and statement gets sent to us with dh’s name first. It’s not a first name alphabet reason or age either as mine is at the beginning of the alphabet and I’m older.

I asked them once why his name is first and they said the computers automatically change joint accounts details to list the male first.

Gizlotsmum · 04/08/2018 20:13

Annoys me too!!! Mortgage, estate agents, flights!! So ridiculous I wonder what they would do with same sex couples

Mehaveit · 04/08/2018 20:13

I put my name first on our joint account and it's still first. Companies are odd. And 'system is sexist' is no excuse. Don't do business with sexist companies. Some double glazing firms only make appointments if the 'man of the house' is there. Sod them. It was my money (sold shares), half my house but fully my decision. Peter never even met DH as all the work was supervised by me whilst he was at work.

Which company said this please?

OP you can ask but please don't suggest sexism without something to back it up. amicissimma has demonstrated that they don't default to the male passenger.

Littlebluebird123 · 04/08/2018 20:16

I travelled with P and O today.
Similar situation as I'm the wife, I'm passenger 1, I ordered tickets etc and it's all addressed to me. So I don't know what's going on with yours!

Penfold007 · 04/08/2018 20:23

How odd. I travelled with P&O last week and I booked the ticket. Mrs Pen Fold and Mr Junior Fold,he’s 18 plus. I’ve also travelled with Mr Fold and I’ve always been the lead passenger

CrazyDuchess · 04/08/2018 20:27

Ditto - I've just registered DC in a new school. Dad and I are separated and I made all the contact, appearances the visit and paperwork and communicated the school. Dc have my surname.

When acceptance letter came it was emailed to both of us " Dear Mr xxx and Ms Duchess" Hmm

ForalltheSaints · 04/08/2018 20:52

YANBU.

Mr Bob Chunky could be your son, even a young child, for all they know.

BlueThesaurusRex · 04/08/2018 20:57

That sounds wrong! But I can’t help but laugh about the free advertising Grin

(The above post was supposed to contain a screenshot of the page with P&O in the ad banner 🤣)
