When should I take my coil out?

I know I know, you can’t tell me.
But I wondered what your experiences are like with bleeding after.

I’m getting married in 7 weeks. My coil is due out next month as has been in for 5 years.
We would like to start TTC after the wedding.
I’d be happy to get it taken out now and just use other contraception until after the wedding, but I’ve heard horror stories about people bleedingfor 3 months and I don’t want to be bleeding on my wedding day!

Has anyone had any experience? How was the bleeding?

I’m pretty sure (I hope I’m sure because I have one!) you can get pregnant almost as soon as you take it out as it’s such a low hormonal dose.

Though I’ve just realised that isn’t what you asked so excuse me while I get my coat and slink out unnoticed.

(But also congrats on your wedding!)

What sort of coil is it?

I've got a copper coil and I've only ever 'spotted' for about an hour after a change.

Having said that, the first one was a couple of months overdue for a change (Dr was out of country) and it ended up falling out on its own the day before my appointment Shock

I turned up with it wrapped in loo roll.

Runningupamountain · 02/08/2018 21:56

Postpone getting your coil out until after the wedding, another couple of months with it in will be fine!!

gindrinkingmarypoppins · 02/08/2018 22:03

Is it a copper coil or Mirena? If it's a Mirena then it's actually licensed in some countries for 7 years, just not in the UK.

Whitelisbon · 02/08/2018 22:04

I had my coil removed at the end of February (a few years ago), bled heavily for a week, and was pregnant with twins by the beginning of April.

Subtlecheese · 02/08/2018 22:04

My copper only coil removal didn't cause any bleeding after removal, it was removed during the period though. I had to get mine removed after my honeymoon as it shifted into an uncomfortable position on the flights home! The nurse said it was easier for her. A bit awkward for me, but honestly all embarrassment was short lived!

SueDunome · 02/08/2018 22:08

If it's a mirena coil, leave it in until you're safely past your wedding. I had a major bleed when mine came out (although I'm a lot older than you). Your hormones may also go a bit wild as your body tries to balance out the loss of hormones from the coil.

hendricksy · 02/08/2018 22:08

I took mine out and got pregnant the next day. 😬

PeachesandPie · 02/08/2018 22:10

I had my mirena out and was pregnant 4 weeks later without any bleeding. I wouldn't risk it though, a few weeks longer won't do any harm!

RowenaDedalus · 02/08/2018 22:15

I had mine removed and got pregnant that day. That was the copper though.

hendricksy · 02/08/2018 22:44

Yes mine was the copper , I think dh was hoping for more ahem practice !! 🙈

sarahjaneg · 02/08/2018 22:50

I know this isn't what you asked but I got my coil taken out on the Wednesday, my wedding was 10 days away, I thought that would give me time for the bleeding to pass, however, I fell pregnant on the Friday, then spent my wedding and 2 week honeymoon being sick!!!
Looking back, I wish I'd just waited till after the wedding!

polkadotjersey · 02/08/2018 22:50

Had my Mirena out at the end January and no bleeding at all.

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 02/08/2018 22:54

@sarahjaneg

You had morning sickness at one week pregnant? You wouldn’t have even tested positive at that stage... sure it wasn’t just a bug?

37KAT · 02/08/2018 23:00

I had my mirena out and bled for a few days and then conceived immediately. I didn't even have a period. It was a shock and relief as DD1 had previously taken 16 months of TTC after being on the pill for 10 years.
I'd wait until after the honeymoon. As someone else said, if you did become pregnant before the wedding you may have sickness instead of bleeding. Good luck!

sarahjaneg · 02/08/2018 23:02

Lol, no unfortunately not, that would've been a lot simpler, I have 4dc and have been sick pretty much from the day of conception to the day I gave birth, resulting in numerous hospital stays on drips, the works. I have a condition (does have a medical name but can't remember it) but basically I'm allergic to the hormone your body produces once you are pregnant.

Rachie1973 · 02/08/2018 23:02

If its a Mirena leave it til after the wedding. Mines 8 months over and no-ones concerned.

As to TTC, I had mine removed in March and was pregnant with my daughter by May.

Moonflower12 · 02/08/2018 23:06

I had a Mirena taken out and literally spotted for a day or two.

I got pregnant with a copper one in place. It was found embedded in the placenta at DS's birth!

ShinyBadger · 02/08/2018 23:07

I have a mirena coil on the 2nd one and mine expires it’s 5 years this month but I’m going on holiday in October. I spoke to the consultant and she said to leave it until after my holiday as you can have irregular/heavy bleeding. You can have nothing she said it wld ruin my hols if I have a heavy bleed and cramps. The coil will last longer than it’s 5 years to the day, they say that 5 years is when it’s most effective.

guccihandbag · 02/08/2018 23:23

Had my copper coil out yesterday and no bleeding at all.
