New job reference

I’ve been asked to supply a character reference for a new job as a PT administrator. I don’t actually know off the top of my head who I’d be willing to ask to do this, as it would mean asking someone from long ago... I have been a sahm for a few years and haven’t even done any volunteering in that time as I’ve been wrangling babies!

Is this becoming more common now? I’ve never been asked for one before. I think it’s maybe as my employers have just done the whole “yes, she worked here from this date to this date” and no more, as is the norm I think.

I had a character reference. It can be a family friend.

Hi, i've done this before for a friend, i just sent an email form my work address (wasn't necessary but felt that if they saw I was in a professional role then it would carry more weight).

I just stated that she was considerate, kind, attentive to details (she's a the control freak of our friendship group!) etc

More than likely it won't need to come from anyone that you work with but just someone you've known for a prolonged period

can't be a close friend or relative though.

Oh right, so it is fairly common then? I’ve never heard of it for an admin role.

@newplacenofriends my friends character reference specifically wanted one from someone she had known personally for a number of years - no mention of it not being a friend just it not being a family member.

Probably worth checking requirements of it OP but either way - it's pretty common now, especially if you've not been in the work place for a while

I’ve just had to find a second character reference as my first wasn’t accepted.

I couldn’t use a friend or relative. It was bloody hard to think of someone!
