Posting here for traffic mostly - inspired by the latest spate of MIL/ grandparent threads... I was thinking about Gavin and Stacey - do you reckon Pam would've been the subject of a fair few "nightmare grandmother" threads.

I loved Pam and recognise my own mother in her a lot but I'd say she has all the traits of an overbearing MIL who has an unrealistic expectation of her role as GP.

This is not a MIL bashing thread - i love my MIL even though she drives me potty at times.

To even it up, I also wonder what sort of Narc tendencies Lorelei Gilmore would have as GP given the ending of the recent GIlmore Girls special.

I know I'm over invested but what are you thoughts please?

Pam's lovely.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 29/07/2018 07:14

Pam would have been very over invested in any child of her 'little prince'

Can you imagine Beverley Goldberg Shock

WilburIsSomePig · 29/07/2018 07:27

Frank and Marie Barone are my favourite TV grandparents/parents. 😂

Feb2018mumma · 29/07/2018 07:35

Everyone love Raymond has had two episodes that copied my MIL! I recorded and watched with husband! Was so funny!

MissionItsPossible · 29/07/2018 07:41

Which episodes/scenarios @Feb2018mumma ?

It’s on right now on channel 4 Grin

I loved Pam but I think she would've been full on and completely disregarded anything Stacey said. Gavin wouldn't confront her on anything and it would build loads of resentment all round.

She's a good example of how even though you are a nice person and well meaning you can still get it wrong.

I like Barbara and Jim Royle too! Although they were practically parents to baby David!

Not familiar with these other parents/ grandparents so I'll have to look them up.

Peggy Mitchell - most overbearing grandparent ever? 🤣

Ooh Beverley Goldberg sounds like a hoot (from a distance). Couldn't cope with that myself tbh!

There was one where they came back from honeymoon, dropped in on mum on way home and she asked where the thank you cards were... We got married and went straight on 4 day honeymoon and MIL was upset that although I wrote cards while we were away I hadn't got addresses and sent them! Was nearly word for word and so funny!!!! Can't remember the second, something about the brother and MIL, I love that show so much!

HulaMelody · 29/07/2018 09:01

Ah see I think Pam would be alright because Mick can calm her down.

I had to stop watching everybody loves raymond because Marie was so horrific!! Kept shouting at the tv that Deborah should run for the hills!

HettySunshine · 29/07/2018 09:15

The main problem with Pam, and with Burn and Gwen to a certain extent is a lack of boundaries. For example when she went into the bathroom to measure up while Stacey was in the shower and g&b talking to Gav about baby making while they made the bed.

Not to mention Nessa & Smithy! I think Stace would have had very little say in her dc's upbringing but no one would be mean, just everyone would get stuck in!

HettySunshine · 29/07/2018 09:15

That should be Bryn, not Burn, obviously!

Snipples · 29/07/2018 10:39

Yeah totally agree Hetty. I wonder if Stacey would've calmed down a bit as a mother - she was just as bad in many respects ie oversharing private info with her family a lot and clashing with Pam over not much at times.

Imagine what sort of grandparent Monica from friends would be. I expect she would be overbearing too.

Boundaries are the things that cause the issues aren't they!

I agree with a Pp, Pam always had Mick to calm her down if she was going ott so I think she would of been a great mil. Stacey was always hard work...

Whenever I watch that show it reminds me of my MIL! Thank god we don’t live across the street from her.
