To hate my damn driveway

I have just brought home my very first car which I'm head over heels for.

I decided to reverse into my driveway so I could drive out tomorrow and I absolutely hated it! So many walls and gates and other things to drive in to!!! At one point announced I would not be parking in the drive way at all ever and that the whole thing could bugger off!

But i do like being able to see it from the living room window and making sure it's still there!

On a serious note I do have space in front of the drive I could park on but it feels daft to have a drive way and never park on it?

You will get used to it. I'm a few months in from passing me test and have a tight, uphill drive which can only really be reversed onto from the narrow road. We also have a brand new car which I love.

It takes my DH seconds and 2 moves to get it on..it takes me 3 and a bit longer. I hate it still and sometimes park it outside for him to sort out, but the more I do it the easier it is.

You’ll get used to it. Do you have the beeps when you reverse? I reverse onto mine, it’s a very awkward angle to reverse off. Took me a while to do it, but I’m Lewis Hamilton now! Just keep at it, it improves your insurance premium to be parked on a drive.

It’s amazing how quickly you get used to tricky manoeuvres when you have to do them every day. Honestly, in a couple weeks you’ll be able to park there with your eyes closed.

I don't have any beeps for reversing. To be honest I did ok other than I nearly took the wing mirror off! I'm a bit PFC (precious first car) and really don't want to have any issues.

Can you not drive in forwards and reverse out?

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 28/07/2018 20:05

I hit my dustbin reversing out this week
I also scraped the running board on the path edge (different car) the next day
I regularly end up with my wing mirror in the hedge between us and next door
I’ve lived here 28 years! Grin
I’m sure you’ll be fine after a while!

You will get used to it OP, just keep practising and it will become second nature.

Our house has a larger than average drive, so we can drive in, park next to each other and reserve into the turning spot, and then drive out, it makes life easy, I won’t half miss it when we eventually move.

PinkBuffalo · 28/07/2018 20:12

How wide is the drive? I can do a 5 point turn on mine which means I can drive on frontwards and turn around. Any chance of that with yours? Might be less risk of bumping into stuff?

DH occasionally hits the house or fence. Only about 10" spare each side. Neighbour replaced fence with concrete base & posts... not looking forward to it getting hit.

My drive is as big as a standard parking space, but with very solid walls. You'll get used to it.
