to ask how do I carry bikes on a Volvo XC90

Posting for traffic. We have the model before the current one & obviously plenty of boot space but that will be filled with suitcases, pram etc.

Should the bikes sit on the back or go on the roof, are there other options?

Roof bars or a tow bar rack are probably the best option.

We have the Volvo tow rack and it’s pretty easy to use but once it’s all set up with bikes on you can’t get in the boot and pretty much every time we use it we accidentally pack something vital in there.

Thule racks (mounted on tow bar) are very good, ours can be tilted backwards to allow access to the boot when loaded.
Ours takes 3 adult bikes, I don't know if there are models for eg 2 adults and some kids.

The tilting bike rack off a tow bar is great. You can get in and out the boot and ours takes 4 bikes. We have a Thule one, not the identical one sold by the car manufacturer for more £££.

Sorry to hijack.... we are a family of 5 and the logistics of taking bikes for all of us has meant we haven’t done anything about it. Does anyone know if it’s legal to have a boot mounted rack for, say, 2 bikes, AND a towbar mounted rack for a further 3 bikes?

I wouldn't have thought you'd be able to fit two bikes on a boot mount in the space between the boot and the rack. Bike are surprisingly 3 dimensional when you start stacking them up!

We wouldn’t be able to fit a boot rack as well as the towbar rack. We take five bikes, four on the rack and one (the tiniest) in the roof box or locked to another on the rack.

I have roof bars, light bikes though so very easy to pop up on roof and secure

gunnyBear I’m sure yours was nicer that ours as it was the new model which I would like in the future. Never considered Audi, parents had the classic 7 seater estate Volvo when I was a kid so just followed in their footsteps 😁.
