To not be able to get fortnite to work?

FermatsTheorem · 25/07/2018 19:00

I fucking hate my son's Xbox. (I am not a gamer... I do not understand these things.)

So, I have got as far as working out that we need an Xbox live gold account - and we've created one. We've been into the privacy settings and set it up so that he can play multiplayer (or so I thought).

Every time we try to get into Fortnite it comes up with an error message saying "To do this, change a setting. You are unable to see content other people make because of how your account is set up. This can be changed in your privacy & online safety settings on Xbox.com."

I do not understand. We've been into the privacy settings, everything is as slack as it can be (not too worried about this as xbox is in front room, attached to TV, and I think parental supervision trumps net nanny services anyway). We've tried switching it off and on (my technical go to...)

Help (dissolves into pitiful sobbing in the hope that someone rescues me). There must be a tech savvy MN-er out there who can help a technophobe.

(The really scary thing is a lot of my day job involves writing computer code. But that's on a linux based system with proper coding languages, not crappy Microsoft incomprehensible OS with "take a wild guess at what to do next").

Turn the Xbox on and off

FermatsTheorem · 25/07/2018 19:58

Already tried that, Many - it hasn't helped :-(

(But thanks - glad to know someone's reading Smile)

I console myself with the thought that my friend's DH, who is majorly techy, spent 3 hours of swearing at the xbox trying to get his son's account to work. On the other hand, if it took him 3 hours, I reckon I'm on target for... about 3 centuries?

Does it have an age on it? I don't use Xbox but I am a PC gamer and a Nintendo gamer - sometimes if there's an age associated with the account it can block online multiplayer? I might just be talking out of my ass, though.

MrsMooks · 25/07/2018 20:01

Have you paid for the xbox live gold subscription?

Saloubalou · 25/07/2018 20:01

I was going to say check privacy etc, but I see you’ve done that. You have to be able to speak to others I think so check that is open. After an update ds’ soemtimes doesn’t work but that’s a different error message. You can email epic but takes a couple of days to get a reply.

FermatsTheorem · 25/07/2018 20:02

I think at some stage in the dim and distant past it registered with me that having multiple accounts was the path to madness because it's so complicated to manage, so there is only one account on there, mine, with my DOB (I just checked). So unless Microsoft is net-nannying menopausal women...

(NB the xbox and TV are in the sitting room, so it's not like it would be used unsupervised).

Yes, just put the Xbox Live Gold subscription on tonight. Does it have an activation period?

Will check the "able to talk to others" option.

Thanks for the suggestions... keep 'em coming. (Fuck, someone let me go back to writing FORTRAN, please, or Python... We have nice sys-admins who do all the complicated "setting the system up" stuff - I just have to use it.)

It's not a 360 is it...I don't think you can play fortnite on a 360?

FermatsTheorem · 25/07/2018 20:06

No, XBox One.

MrsMooks · 25/07/2018 20:07

Usually activates within minutes I think so can't be that then. Xboxes are very difficult to navigate!

Saloubalou · 25/07/2018 20:10

Hmm. Are you managing your privacy via Xbox live, or the console?

SnappedAndFarted18 · 25/07/2018 20:10

OP I just asked my two teenage sons they suggested checking all parental/privacy controls as one may have possibly been missed failing that they said to try deleting Fortnite & re-installing it again 😌 They're Fortnite crazy although ours is on the PS4 lol hopefully you can get it working soon 😌

MsJolly · 25/07/2018 20:10

DS (12) plays Fortnight on Xbox one-he is currently raging with fury! The last update seems to have had a glitch in it and he says that around 25% of Xbox users are affected😱😱😱 and he can't get on at all. He has even tried de-installing and re-installing in an attempt to thwart it, but no! He is hoping that the next upgrade (which seems to happen virtually weekly) fixes the glitch.

Doesn't help anyone desperate to game but might be the reason you can't get on.

MsJolly · 25/07/2018 20:11

Doesn't help as his brother has a PS4 and that's fine! Things are not pretty in our house! 😱😱😱

FermatsTheorem · 25/07/2018 20:15

I've tried tinkering with the privacy settings on both the xbox itself and online using my laptop.

Might try the uninstall and re-install route next.

I am preparing to bribe a techy friend of mine from work with promises of curry.

PuntCuffin · 25/07/2018 20:16

MsJolly - I can only dream of that happening! DS 12 has managed to set it up on every goddamn phone, tablet, laptop in the house so he can have friends round and them all play together in a team on multiple devices. As well as having other friends online.

On one level, my life is Fortnite Hell. But, it allows me to get on with my work during the day!

exaspirational · 28/07/2018 14:37

Did you solve the problem? I've got a similar one with an account that ought to let fortnite work, but doesn't. Been tearing my hair out...

Sweets123 · 28/07/2018 15:01

DP said check your NAT isn't strict it should be open or moderate, clear cache, reset router then 'forget' wireless on console and then re-do it and double check the family and privacy settings. don't know if any of that that helps at all Smile

FermatsTheorem · 29/07/2018 21:38

Eventually sorted it out - friend tipped me off that his xbox account had been hacked and suggested I change the password and put 2-factor authentication on the account. I've done that and it's working fine now.

Very weird - never had anything hacked before! (That I know of).

(might be worth a try @exaspirational )
