We have a rented property (currently about to try to re-let) and are re-carpeting throughout.

Letting Agency have advised that we opt for a grey coloured carpet whereas we had brown (OK then, beige) in mind.

It'll be a speckled type carpet rather than solid plain colour.

What would you prefer as a tenant ? Walls are mainly magnolia/white.

Nearly everywhere I've rented has had brown carpet and magnolia walls. Boring but practical, I guess.

Im about to change my carpets from beigey brown to charcoal.

Beige. I’m not keen on grey.

I think grey would hide marks better, if that's a factor. In a rental property I'd probably have laminate.

Beige with speckles

PetitCornichon · 25/07/2018 16:27

As a renter myself I'd personally prefer a solid grey. A bit more modern, goes with everything and doesn't show dirt as much.

Speckled is a no no no in terms of trendiness. It screams 'old lady'

I hate brown because it looks old fashioned. I hate beige as it shows dirt in next to no time.

Last year DH and I turned a house down as when we went to view it the landlord had just laid a brown speckled carpet from top to bottom of a 3-storey house. Even though the house was great I just couldn't live with the hideous carpet.

I would prefer a dark grey, solid colour. Extra fluffy.

I'm a landlord, have over 100 properties and own a lettings agent. I have hard-wearing, plain charcoal grey carpet in my houses as it's the most durable and practical. Please don't get speckled carpet, it's so dated and not to mention ugly. Also, get high quality underlay. I tend to go for a woven/twist type of carpet (the one that has ridges) as it lasts longer.

WonkyWay · 25/07/2018 18:34

I've come back to defend brown speckled carpets 😁. I find charcoal/grey carpets cold looking. I agree that brown speckled carpets can look old fashioned but it depends on the shade of brown. A brown with a yellowy/gold background looks old fashioned but one with more mushroom or coffee undertones can look nice.

Looks like grey is a more popular choice. I personally think patterned are dated but from experience a plain solid colour shows marks more than some kind of mottled colour.

Glad someone else likes beige though !

Grey it is and will get decent underlay as I do think cheap underlay is a false economy.
