Hiya, sorry I am posting this here for traffic but in a bit of a pickle.

5 year old son has woken up half an hour ago complaining of a stomach ache. From what I can tell it’s painful on the left side of abdomen. He’s falling back asleep and then writhing in pain the next. It doesn’t just quite sit right with me for trapped wind, even though I know that can be really painful!

Logistics of getting him seen would be a nightmare right now, but obviously I would do it if need be. He’s fallen back asleep I’m waiting to see if he wakes again.

I would call 111 and explain, I'm sure you'll have a restless night if you don't

I think you just have to play it by ear overnight. Be prepared to go to a&e if he gets worse, vomiting, on the basis that it could be appendicitis

well the appendix is on the right and he’s extremely unlikely to fall asleep with appendicitis.
I would monitor him and see how he goes.

That said, I’m speaking from my own experience of appendicitis.
Perhaps other people can fall asleep during that kind of pain. I couldn’t though.

It's rare but you appendix can be on the left.

He’s been sick now.

Obviously I’m aware it was only half an hour at that point but I was worried about his reaction to the pain as it was pretty extreme.
