Has anyone eaten here?

AIBU to book it to celebrate my husbands 40th birthday?

We live in West Yorkshire and have 2 young kids under 4 so wouldn’t want to travel too far. This would be our first night away from them.

I was thinking of 2 nights, with this restaurant one night and then explore area. Anyone know ilkley that can recommend.

Or if not - please recommend wonderful places to me as a surprise for him. We live in leeds. Thank you!

Haven’t dined at The Box Tree so not sure how nice it is.

However I can thoroughly recommend The Man behind The Curtain in Leeds centre or The House of Tides in Newcastle. There is also The Raby Hunt in Darlington.

We went there for our first anniversary and had a lovely time. I would recommend it. Although that was 7 years ago.

Thank you both x

I haven’t, but one of my friends went there for an anniversary dinner a few years back and said it was lovely.

We did a taster menu here in November, it was amazing - would definitely recommend :)

Skosh in York is outstanding, and the meal is lots of little sharing plates. It has me in ecstasy every time.

fruitpastille · 22/07/2018 22:48

We loved it. Slightly old fashioned, lovely service, amazing food. That was over a decade ago though!

Friends have been to the Yorke Arms and recommended it. Expensive though.

We haven't been to the Box Tree yet, but I did get DH a voucher for Christmas for us to go down.

I can also recommend House of Tides in Newcastle, we've been twice and are going back next month for DH's birthday (do you see a theme? 😊) gorgeous food right on the quayside

Also, further north, but Mark Greenaway in Edinburgh was amazing!

Bluetrews25 · 23/07/2018 19:50

I think The Box Tree was THE posh place to go, recall my parents going there about 40 years ago! Had a great reputation, and from PPs, it sounds like it still does!

DarthLipgloss · 23/07/2018 19:55

I live in a village just outside Ilkley.
Box Tree is lovely, food ace but is quite traditional service wise. It would be a treat though.
There's lots of nice bars in Ilkley, Bar T'at, Gin Lounge and nice one for cocktails right next to train station.
Other things to do- walk round Bolton Abbey, walk to Cow & Calf rocks, visit Haworth, steam train at Haworth, go to Addingham for lovely food and drink at The Fleece.

I’ve been twice and it is amazing. But it is ridiculously expensive and i’m not totally sure it’s worth it.

However I’d say if you can afford it then it’s certainly an experience. The service is fantastic too, although it does make me giggle that they have to explain what’s on your plate 😀

spinduffy · 23/07/2018 20:09

I was there 9 years ago and loved it!

Move2WY · 23/07/2018 20:35

Thanks everyone. Especially @DarthLipgloss for the extra tips!!

Oh it’s lovely. Expensive but a nice meal. We went for an anniversary a couple of years ago. Go and enjoy!

I've not been to the Box Tree but a relative was underwhelmed. Another vote for the Man Behind The Curtain though. Afternoon tea at Betty's a must, Ilkley Lido if the weather holds, or walk the Dalesway to Addingham on the riverside. Piccolos roof terrace for a cocktail pre dinner. Four kitchens for a really different curry experience with specialities from each area of India. Have a wonderful time whatever you choose to do!

@MsSquiz DH and I have also been to restaurant Mark Greenaway (lunch), we thoroughly enjoyed it.
