To think I could be pregnant despite the fact that I'm bleeding?

Please help! I have been TTC for nearly two years now and had three early miscarriages. In the last few months I have started to have a lot of spotting before the start of my period, sometimes for over a week. In order to help with this and to support a possible pregnancy, this month I have been put on luteal phase progesterone, which I was instructed to take for 10 days after ovulation and then stop.

I am now 14dpo and on cycle day 32. I've had spotting since Wednesday but my period is just not starting properly at all. I am wearing a pad but there is nothing on it or maybe one brown spot each time I check.

You might think this is just the same as before, but the difference is that previously the spotting began much earlier - at around cd23- and by the time my period was actually due it would arrive, IYSWIM. It is now three days late and still showing no signs of starting properly.

Please be honest - under these circumstances would you take a pregnancy test? Or is it really unlikely that I'm pregnant? Any advice appreciated :) thank you!

I would test, spotting in early pregnancy isn't uncommon, it could be implantation bleeding. Don't want to get your hopes up though, it could just be your body adjusting to the progesterone

FittonTower · 21/07/2018 23:07

It's possible, i had spotting when my period was due both times I've been pregnant.

Claireshh · 21/07/2018 23:07

I had spotting like you when I was pregnant with my daughter. I would take a test if I were you. 🤞🏻

ItchyBitchFace · 21/07/2018 23:08

You could be. Spotting isn't unusual in early pregnancy but obviously the only way to know is to test. Best off using FMU and a sensitive test. Good luck.

Thank you for quick replies so far! I love mumsnet :) the thing that is worrying me is that sometimes when I wipe it has been pink or a bit red :( but nothing on pad, so no real 'flow' at all. Those of you who spotted in early pregnancy, was it red at all?

I also had implantation bleeding. Take a test but don’t get your hopes up. Tests are pretty cheap now and if you expect it to be negative then a positive will be a nice bonus. Good luck 🍀

Secretlifeofme · 21/07/2018 23:21

I should also add that I have given up symptom spotting after too many disappointments, so no symptoms to report but I have noticed that my boobs have been sore even after the spotting started - normally the PMS soreness would disappear as soon as my period arrives.

I tested this morning and BFN. Not surprised, just frustrated as I am still bleeding slightly but the flow of my period just seems not to have appeared. I have cramps and feel as though I have my period, but am not bleeding properly at all. Has anyone else had this? It's annoying because I don't know what day to count as CD1 for my next cycle :(

This happened to me for 3 months I had a lighter browny 'period' at regular intervals. I thought it was because I was breastfeeding dd2 and my periods were just starting again. It wasn't, I was pregnant with ds, positive test followed by scan a week later which showed I was 13 weeks!

I would leave it a little while and test again.

Secretlifeofme · 22/07/2018 14:33

Thank you @123bananas - what a strange thing to happen! I don't know really, I suppose it's just possible that I could be pg after all, but I don't really feel pregnant IYSWIM. I feel as though I'm on my period. Except I'm not really! Argh Angry

The only time I had this, I was having an ectopic pregnancy. So if you do get a positive test, please get checked out. Just to be on the safe side.

lambdroid · 22/07/2018 14:36

I’m in a similarish position.

Not sure when I ovulated, but was (in theory) due my period last Wednesday. I’ve only recently stopped breastfeeding so it could be out of whack, but I’d been feeling weird. Thought I felt those pre-period twinges, but it didn’t arrive.

Tested Thursday, got a positive. Tested again, got a negative. Then got another 2 positives, 1 on a digital.

I had some very faint pink spotting on Friday, then a small amount of blood and then brown spotting on Sarurday, but only on wiping, nothing on a pad.

Called 111, got sent to A&E. Urine test came back negative so started assuming the worst, but blood test came back as a positive, though with a low hcg level.

I have to go back tomorrow for another blood test. Levels need to double for good news. They said it could be an early miscarriage, or just too early for a higher reading.

I’m definitely not saying get your hopes up as I’m currently trying to keep mine in check, but it could be worth testi again in a few days.

Meanwhile, sympathy. This is all pretty hellish.

Secretlifeofme · 22/07/2018 14:58

Thank you all. @lambdroid, what a nightmare! Good luck to you and here's hoping for a positive outcome!

Thank you.

I’ve also just realised that my post could have come across as being really insensitivive and thoughtless. If it did, I’m really sorry, I definitely didn’t mean it to and was just trying to explain my current experience as genuinely thought some bits might be relevant.

lambdroid · 22/07/2018 15:10

I also apparently can’t type. Argh.

Fatted · 22/07/2018 15:17

I would take a test. I had similar spotting and bleeding at the start of both of my pregnancies. On both occasions I thought it was my period, but the bleeding was slightly different, not as long or heavy as a period. I got positive tests a few days after on each occasion.

MeltingPregnantLady · 22/07/2018 15:18

This happened to me and I was told spotting before a period starts is indicative of low progesterone. Took a miscarriage and another year of TTC before my cycle sorted itself out enough for us to conceive.

Secretlifeofme · 22/07/2018 15:20

@lambdroid don't be silly, there was nothing insensitive at all about your post Flowers
@Fatted, thank you. I don't suppose you remember whether your 'period' was on time and if so, how long after the bleeding you got a positive? Testing this morning would have been CD33 of a 29-30 day cycle so I would have expected a positive if I was pregnant :(

I had such heavy spotting I had to wear pads for days. And it was bright red. Like nose bleed blood, not period blood. It happened again a month later as well.
Rest as much as you can and good luck.

Secretlifeofme · 22/07/2018 15:22

@MeltingPregnantLady I am on luteal phase progesterone but was told by the gynae to take it for 10 days after ovulation and then stop. I stopped taking it last Sunday but this issue is still happening :(

OP posts:
MeltingPregnantLady · 22/07/2018 15:28

It may be worth speaking to your gynae or gp. I found recurrent miscarriages depleted my body of who knows what and i think just needed to recover (not very helpful I know). All tests and investigations came back clear and we had unexplained cause of our losses. As you can tell by my name we have been blessed with good news, hopefully you will be too.

MeltingPregnantLady · 22/07/2018 15:29

I was on progesterone from positive test to confirmed loss/12 weeks. My gynae is of the school of thought progesterone is a placebo not a valid treatment (helpful again)

Fatted · 22/07/2018 15:31

With DS1 I had no period beforehand for about 3 months. So I have no idea. I just assumed when I started bleeding that was my period. It was only after feeling continually nauseous after a night out, I thought it might be something else.

With DS2, it was around the time my period was due and again I thought bleeding was my period. But it stopped after a day. Knowing what happened first time, I took a test to rule it out and was pleasantly surprised.

Secretlifeofme · 22/07/2018 22:55

Thanks to all who commented. Posting on MN seems to have kick-started my period, which has now begun in earnest! So at least I can stop worrying now Smile even though I'm disappointed not to be pregnant, of course.

I really hope it all works out for you.
