To make myself throw up (trigger warning?)

I had a really bad migraine a few days ago. Ive had them since i was 16 but as i grew up i went from having them weekly to monthly and eventually sporadically.

So a few days ago i started having blurred vision, had a stiff neck and was very grumpy in work (small things like someone not gentle closing a drawer would make me annoyed). Then the morning of the migraine i started feeling dizzy. As soon as i got pain in my head i knew i was in for it!!

I retreated to my room. After about 2 hours i was in agony. I went to the bathroom and made myself sick. I felt almost immediate relief from the dizziness. And was able later that night to eat something. All good abd back to work the next day- bit groggy but could work.

My workmate was horrified that i had made myself sick! She said that if i needed to be sick my body would be sick. I said its a method ive had for years to deal with migraine. She said no wonder youre skeletal Hmm (im a size 8 for context so not skeletal!!)

Aibu or is she!

Depends on how often you do this I guess...

Coconutcreampie · 21/07/2018 19:52

I don't think you are being unreasonable as long as these are the only circumstances where you make yourself vomit. I get migraines too and sometimes vomiting can make you feel better so I get that.

TheGreatCornholio · 21/07/2018 19:53

I cacannot tolerate feeling sick and will make myself sick the second I feel nausea starting. Always feel loads better!

MrMeSeeks · 21/07/2018 21:26

Yanbu, ill do anything to make myself feel better!
I also make myself if im really nauseous as it makes me feel better.

LemonScentedStickyBat · 21/07/2018 21:29

I’ve always found that throwing up makes the pain even worse so just put up with the nausea but yanbu to do this if it helps you

EdWinchester · 21/07/2018 21:32

I can't see a problem. Your colleague is over reacting.

Yutes · 21/07/2018 21:34

Some migraines can be triggered by certain types of food?

rainbowlou · 21/07/2018 21:34

My daughter suffers with horrendous migraines and the only relief she feels from the stabbing pains in her head is to throw up, if she doesn’t do it automatically she will make herself sick to relieve the pressure.
Ignore her, she obviously doesn’t know the pain they can cause x

AtSea1979 · 21/07/2018 21:35

I guess it also depends on how you make yourself sick. When I’m ill I only need to look at a toilet to start being sick in it. I wouldn’t put my fingers down my throat but if it makes you feel better I guess it’s up to you.

Lemonyknickers · 21/07/2018 21:37

I'm 5 stone over weight but make myself sick when I get migraine s. It helps, sometimes even makes them fade away. I think I'd possibly do anything when I'm in the middle of a serious migraine attack as basically I just want to die. If it helps you and you just do it when you feel sick it's not a problem

WeirdAndPissedOff · 21/07/2018 21:37

I can't see a problem with this - lots of people have said before that vomiting can help with migraines, and I've made myself be sick before when my body hasn't done it itself (severe nausea but no vomiting, for eg).

However as pp have said this depends on whether it's the only time you do this, and how frequent.
If you vomit at other times, or you're finding that you have to do this multiple times per week then it's something that's not very healthy, in one way or another, and would bear at least some thought, if not looking into it further or finding alternate ways to cope

FatSally · 21/07/2018 21:40

Yanbu op.

I haven't vomited 'naturally' for as long as I can remember.

The feeling of nausea (whether food poisoning, bug or alcohol induced...I've had all 3) and not knowing if you'll be sick is unbearable.

As soon as I feel nauseous (rarely!) I'll stick my fingers down my throat. You feel instantly better and have no waiting to do. Win win.

Tomselleckhaskindeyes · 22/07/2018 02:05

In the case of my migraines if they are that bad then being sick really helps.

Greenyogagirl · 22/07/2018 02:07

She’s obviously never had a migraine! I do the exact same, as does my mum who gets cluster headaches

LadyB49 · 22/07/2018 02:11

Haven't had a migraine now for about 15 years.
When I very regularly had them first thing I did was get my fingers down my throat. Throwing up def eased the pain.

Raspberryberetthekindyoufind · 22/07/2018 02:15

I always find throwing up helps a sickness bug and food poisoning as well. So if it’s not happening I will make myself sick. The relief afterwards is amazing

DramaAlpaca · 22/07/2018 02:15

I had migraines for years & they'd build up until I was sick, at which point I'd feel better, but I never considered making myself vomit. I suppose if it works for you then fill your boots, but I couldn't do it. I saw my GP who prescribed medication which sorted me out & treated the migraines. Thankfully post menopause they've gone.
