A notorious Kent landlord who has evicted women with newborn babies is being investigated for discrimination.

Buy-to-let tycoon Fergus Wilsonbanned so-called "coloured" tenantspreviously due to "the curry smell" andtried to sue a vlogger who called him a racist.

He has now evicted four mothers in the Ashford borough.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) said it is "taking action against Mr Wilson in view of his clearly discriminatory practice."

Mr Wilson said he blames the local council's "strict rules" on how quickly boilers need to be fixed in homes with babies.

Mr Wilson claims the council specifies homes with children over the age of five must have necessary work carried out "as soon as possible", but for homes with babies work must commence "immediately".

He said: "What if you can't get a plumber? We cannot guarantee the service at the speed the local authority demands."

'Heart breaking'

A spokesperson for Ashford Borough Council said it initially works with landlords "informally" on a "case by case basis".

"We have a duty to ensure decent standards of housing for tenants who are renting privately. Priority will be given to addressing poor housing conditions that threaten the safety and wellbeing of occupiers."

The evicted tenants had been renting his homes for four years, and Mr Wilson said the decision was "heart breaking" but he did not accept it was discriminatory.

"I'm sorry for the situation, if they were in another borough it wouldn't be a problem. It's only specific to Ashford," he added.

A buy-to-let tycoon who banned Indian and Pakistani tenants from renting his homes "because of the curry smell" is facing legal action.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has applied for an injunction against Fergus Wilson.

In his latest letting criteria, the Kent landlord has also banned zero-hour workers, single parents and "battered wives".

Mr Wilson has defended his lettings policy on economic grounds.

EHRC chief executive Rebecca Hilsenrath said it had applied for an injunction at Central London County Court.

This guy rented a flat out to a facebook friend of mine. The carpet was completely infested with moths and their maggots. He refused to do anything about it and took money out of her deposit for leaving early.

I really doubt anyone who has a choice would rent from this absolute scumbag.

I think the man is despicable but the council & housing associations take forever to fix things mostly because they outsource to the cheapest & the outsources use individual workman - Even if you use British Gas to service etc they wont necessary be able to fix it the day they come unless they have part - however what a landlord can do is supply a heater - (ie the boiler might have died & you might have to wait for the company to book time & order boiler)

@Xenia that's bollocks. If he has a service contract in place they will attend within the guidelines just like they will for you or me if you have a young baby. And his back is then covered.

If you have an electric shower though at the peak of summer it wouldn't be an emergency call out really anyway.

It's not an unreasonable demand from the council. If he's got such an extensive portfolio of properties, he should have a plumbing and maintenance team on contract to deal with any issues. This man is just a tight, greedy, capitalist pig

...thinking of my 3 weeks without hot water last winter... I had a fan heater in the bedroom, then had to put my dressing gown and socks on just to leave the room - it was so cold. That was first of all delays in getting someone out at peak times - everyone wants the boiler men at that stage and secondly once out they cannot always fix it, need to order parts and all sorts. They ahve still not got radiators working in my bathroom....

There are a lot more than 1,000 houses to rent in Kent! I think he has a large share of the Ashford rental market.
Anyway, as a landlord I take out British Gas landlord's cover and therefore can get someone out quickly in emergencies. They were brilliant when the boiler in the property with a very elderly lady resident went on the blink during the snow.

This is why I hate private landlords. We rent but I would far prefer to rent a council house, I would feel more secure and like a human being not a profit monkey.

This man should be charged for racism and sexism, as this will disproportionately affect women. He’s an arsehole of the highest order and should be fined and forced to work with charities helping Asian people and babies. Cunt.

Also, the first year after we had our boiler installed we got a good deal on a high level of cover with British Gas. I was amazed when I reported a leading pipe and they came out the next day 😲 The service is there, you just have to pay for it.

I hate the system rather than the landlords individually. My landlord is perfectly nice, but the system to me feels quite broken.
