To wonder why the school has done this? Can anyone enlighten me?

Posting here for traffic.

My son is in year 9, so starts his exam courses in September. He isn't very academic, he has issues with remaining engaged when bored but which are not bad enough to get a diagnosis of ADD or anything like that. I imagine he is going to find exams difficult.

What he IS good at is anything practical. So bearing this in mind he was supposed to be starting a BTEC in construction in September but today I have had a letter telling me that, after reviewing the course and his academic profile, they have swapped him to GCSE Design Technology (Materials). I don't understand why they have swapped my non academic son from a vocational course to an academic one.

I've phoned the school but the person I need to talk to is out on activities for the rest of the day and they have a half day tomorrow, so I have a very small window of opportunity to sort this before the end of term!

I know it's a long shot but does anyone have a clue what their rationale might be because I can't for the life of me figure out what they're trying to achieve here BUT then I don't have personal experience of BTECs.

To fill up the course ?
Perhaps his BTEC was undersubscribed
Although I’d doubt that

I suppose I'm wondering if BTECs are more academic than I realise. Or if GCSE Design Technology is actually a doddle to pass or something. I don't know, I'm just a bit confused.

GCSE DT is not a walk in the park but neither are BTECs. The BTECs are much more complex than the previous NVQ style vocational qualifications.
There could be many reasons why your son has been swapped, he doesn’t suit the BTEC course; there are too many people who opted for it so some have to move over; they don’t have the staff/resources to offer to all; the group of student who have chosen the course are not compatible with each other.
It’s proably worth trying to get hold of someone to ask why but it is unlikely that anything will change so wouldn’t be an issue to have the conversation in September.
